It is the fan in the big black box full of ECUs. This is a known problem well covered on the forum in the past. Search is your friend  .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember

Does your car go to sleep.

Park up, lock car, see red light on gearstick selector (centre console) is on.

Return to car in about 15 minutes - red light should be off. FF is now sleeping.

Reading it a bedtime story is no help if it is still awake.

I think that I might know the cause

I was in the ECU box the other day on a pals ffrr changing the injector harness.......... and I noticed that there was a temp sender clipped in to the upper half of the box nearest to the windscreen........ didn't think much about it until now, just had a look on Microcat and it says Dah! Sensor ECU Temp

Part Number YWL000030 and is around £15, that would be my first port of call, if that doesn't do it then I'd be looking at the wiring to that sensor for a short, Good Luck  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

@miggit - well I never knew that - useful info thanks.

If it is just a 2 wire thermostat (he laughs uncontrollably at thinking such a simple device may be fitted) I suppose (if you are confident about the way it works) you could always try disconnecting or shorting it out depending if it is normally closed or normally open contact. Howard

Err, Not only is it a 2 wire jobbie, but it is also threaded, like a water one on the head, and then just poked in to a plastic clip Not very custom fit but on the up side it's obviously cheap and nasty so they can't over charge  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

The fan defiantly runs when the key is out, but as the ECU's go to sleep I can't see the temp going up, but, I would not recommend running the car without the fan, god knows that the ECU's are temperamental enough, without overheating them....... that could be a very costly mistake  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Just had a look at the wiring, the fan is powered directly from the sensor, which is in turn powered directly from the BCU, from what I can see there is no fuse between the components, so the easy kill is out of the question. Looking at the way it is wired the only thing that can cause the fan to run constantly is the temperature sensor, it must have failed in the "on" position. I will have a dig around and see if I can find the temp range that it operates within, there is a good chance that an after market one will do the job

In the meantime I would suggest unplugging the sensor to see what happens.... if it stays on then you have a short in the wires within the ECU box, that would be cured by following the wire from the sensor to the fan in the bottom on the box, but if the fan stops then it's the sensor, but I wouldn't run without the fan, might end in  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

while these are common s/h there aren't any mainstream outlets selling them

You could try a call to these chaps https://www.britishparts.co.uk/ and quote part number YWL000030, or failing that there is always the local stealers..........

OR, you could try BMW, you might be surprised... there main parts store is in Northampton, so Herts Beds and Bucks get same day parts deliveries the Sensor is used in just about every BMW ECU box and has 1741900 BMW35C stamped in it, so they should be able to work it out from that  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!
