P/exchange's

After being to a couple of Dealerships and getting prices for my SC as a trade in , which they just lift straight from a computer screen , They don't take into consideration the extras that you have put on , ie: Upgraded alloys , front and rear lamp guards , Mud Flaps , Running Boards .............

Yet when you go to purchase say a used car they add these on to the price of the car you are buying ....

So i am thinking if i just put a set of 06 alloys , on took off the running boards , mudflaps and light guards would i just get offered the same price as before .........

Just having a wee rant ............ Laughing

You most likely would get the same price Mick.

Remove the extras and either keep them for the new car or sell them on

Seems to be the problem with sales people in the modern 'corporate' dealerships.

They dont actually employ anyone who knows anything about cars, anybody at all can do the job, just get the info from a screen after having entered the details, or look it up in a book.

Even if you want to negotiate on price, they have to 'refer' back to a higher authority to get the deal approved.

Had a similar problem a few years ago, were swapping the wifes RR, it was literally in perfect condition, with a good number of extras, - we couldnt get anyone to come out of a showroom to look at the car, they just gave us the trade in figure that the 'book' said. SO.. sold it privately to a friend who was thrilled that they got it much less than main dealer price, and we got an extra couple of thousand more for the car.

I don't expect a dealership to not make a profit but sometimes it does make me wonder.

If I'm getting an offer of mid 20's for my car and it's up on a forecourt for 35k - which seems about right for a good spec 07 S/C in good condition and the right colours then that's nearly 10k to play with.

LR dealers seemed to me to be notorious in their lack of give on the price which is fine but that's a lot of profit... even factoring in advertising, running it throught the bodyshop, valet, salesman's time, warranty, etc., that's still got to be £6k profit from one secondhand car.

Great for a dealership to do well and I certainly don't begrudge making a good living but it just feels a bit too rich for my liking, especially when there's additional profit made on the other side of the deal.

So even being kind to the dealer on figures he must be making 5k out of my vehicle... If you then look on the purchase I've got all that to go through again... he has the markup on the vehicle I'm buying so there's another 5k in the pot - total profit on the deal is then looking like £10k

By all means make a few grand out of me coming in but don't kick the a$$ out of it. Or, am I missing something?

I have been thinking to move from my S/C to a similar age/spec (or maybe even slightly less) TDV8 as our mileage profile is changing but the price to change bearing in mind the above makes it uneconomical even factoring my additional fuel and depreciation on an S/C vs. TDV8 over a 3 year period.

Even the fact I'll be going back to the LR dealer in a couple of years for the new RR (i.e, some customer loyalty or hedging a bet best upon it) doens't factor one iota it would seem.

In general they will only give you the price they expect at auction less the administration/transport cost of selling it at auction. Therefore you can expect a little lower than advertised Trade/PX prices although with a bit of negotiation and say a Glass's guide print off you should get the official "Clean" PX price if its a good example.
