IT & Technology rant (avec colourful adjectives)

Is it just me or is every IT bod in the universe a bloody control freak?

Started a new job a few weeks ago. Love the job, no questions. The computer supplied is, unfortunately, a MacBook Pro. What a POS. Completely useless in a technical corporate environment.

So, after battling with the damn thing for 2 or 4 weeks I finally lost my rag and decided to bootcamp the thing with a Windows-7 install. Nope, needs the main BIOS password which IT won't condescend to trust me with. Bloody great!

So I asked why the hell not? Security apparently. Yeah right, like MacOS is getting group policies applied, or as if a Windows Domain can exert any kind of control over a Unix based system at all. The OS isn't locked down at all so it's Censored easy to break but pert nigh impossible to repair using the boot DVD supplied. Can't boot from that without the BIOS password.

So the IT Bod offers me a Vmware Fusion install with a corporate image Windows XP virtual machine. Huh???? You have XP machines? So why are you torturing me with this Censored Mac then? 'Company Policy' in my division apparently.

Now I used to work in IT, many years ago. Support, Server support, Networks, the whole 9 yards. I have since graduated (READ 'got a life') to design and pre-sales technical evaluation so I'm no longer on the 'inside' so to speak. Despite holding numerous certifications such as CCDP, VCP, CCSE, MCSE, and, for efforts outside with workplace, an MSc, apparently I'm still not qualified enough to be trusted with a poxy BIOS password.

As for the Mac............and the IPAD, I-PLOP & "I-(drop most calls)-PHONE" for that matter, Steve Jobs has way too much to answer for. That bloke is the Anti-Christ; evil personified; and aside from being a complete Censored as well, he's probably Censored off more people than Hitler, Saddam & Bin-Laden put together. For "Apple" read " Censored Censored ", FS for short.....as in.....

"The wife called me today on my FS iphone and she asked me to check the opening hours at the local gymn. So I picked up my FS IPAD to look them up on the web when the battery died, mainly because the " Censored Censored Company Inc" (FSCI) won't trust me to install a new battery, but I digress. So I sparked up my FS Macbook to use that instead when FSCI Safari locks solid. Swapping the FS Iphone over to my other hand cos of a rather hot ear by now it drops the call. Oh yeah, the FSCI want to charge me 20 something quid for a bumper to correct their Censored design faults, did I mention just how FS that is?"

And so on it goes, without ever letting up from the depths of Censored Censored .

Net result? Bought myself a Dell notebook, installed Win-7 & Office 2010. Loaded the Cisco VPN client to access corporate world and Hey Presto. A machine which actually works. A version of Excel which will run VB scripts for the complex calculation stuff I need to do, Proper Outlook instead of Ghey Entourage, a revolutionary 2 button mouse, None of those restrictive group policies, just a machine which does what I need without having to grovel to the group with no social skills and a huge Censored superiority complex.

Steve Jobs, did I mention the prick??? Well I hope he dies the death of a million dry butt- Censored .

Right, and BREATHE. Rant over.

Dom

Holy Censored Dom!

Nice day at the office dear? I thought I was tired! Thumbs Up

That's probably the most honest Apple review I've ever read by the way...

I really hate people who cannot bring themselves to speak their mind freely.
Are you saying that you may have a slight aversion to apples?

Ah yes, I'm laughing now. Aversion?? Me?? Whatever gives you that impression.

FS Macbook now confined to laptop bag for metings where the boss might pitch up.
Sim removed from FS Iphone and inserted into HTC Desire.
IPAD cleaned and boxed back up. On shelf in office where it stays until IT demand it back.
Dell now fully functional with some proper drive encryption installed. Much more secure than the FS Macbook.

As for the nice day at the office, well I've had a few very hectic weeks. New job, newish company, new product with lots of interest, approx 15000 air miles covered in last 4 weeks and all the while this FS technology hamstringing me in the FSCI world of FS-ness. At least now I can look forward to getting the job done in less than 20 hours a day and also making my targets. In all my years I've never failed to deliver on a target but this FS junk has driven me closer than ever before. There just ain't enough hours in the day to deal with all the FS workarounds that you HAVE to do.

Oh, missed the best bit. The corporate INTRANET only works with IE, not firefox, not Opera, not Chrome, IE. And guess what........NOT Censored SAFARI EITHER. You couldn't make it up. Big Cry

As for speaking my mind, well I normally like to try and see both sides and keep an open mind. I kept an open mind for 4 weeks and all that time my opinion of FSCI was doing nothing but deteriorate. 1800 quid for this POS (taking out all the accessories they gave me).......well that would have bought me a VERY nice laptop, a Cisco CIUS tablet, a decent Android phone (which doesn't require "optional" bumpers to work properly) and still left change for a few pints.

Apples? You can Censored stick 'em thanks. Preferably up Jobs' arse. DRY !! Thumbs Up

Had a rep on the phone today ( and I use that noun/verb thingy in the loosest sense of the word)
It went like this:
Hello, Hello, Hello!
I go:
Hi Owen
he goes:
Hello, Hello, Hello can you hear me?
this went on x3.
Then the lovely sound of cut off silence.

Why do companies let their reps use unstable new products only fit for dicking about with stupid unproductive apps which make zero revenue and loads of hassle.
Plus what is it with the fruit names for tech stuff?
4 Apples?
No thanks if I have to I will stick with some berrys please.

To be fair, the IT guy is only following the rules. If he gave me the BIOS PW he'd get fired. It's the policy makers who need shooting.

None of the IT policies are based around actually enabling us mere mortals to get the job done, they're all based on keeping IT calls to a minimum. Great theory I suppose. Prevent anyone from actually using a computer and we won't get any calls about broken computers.......a tad self defeating though.

Rule No 1 - be in charge of IT in your organisation!

Rule No 2 - for IT policies, choice of hardware and software, see Rule No 1 (but give people a choice in order to be productive!)

Rule No 3 - Provide: Apple Products for Sheep, Newbies and Idiots (people who want their lives to be controlled by the machine), Windows Products for Idiots, Sheep and people who want to spend their lives fighting their machine and dragging it down with anti this that and the other, Linux for people who can do something productive with their working day, and geeks

Rule No 4 - Quality = fulfilling customer requirements .
