I use giffgaff which is based on a SIM only 30 day rolling period and you top up as you need and pick a bundle for each month (depending on usage required).

Depends where you're staying & whether you will have a good 3/4G signal - IMHO coverage is more important than price - not sure if you can check in advance.

Don't know if the data allowance is sufficient for you but I use a Tesco pay as you go when in UK. It has some advantages on free top up ( the free bit generally lasts for a month) in addition to the paid for element. The other benefit is that the unused credit does not seem to be time limited. I have gone nearly a year between uses and still retained the credit.
