I have been a very happy owner of a 2006 4.2 SC for about 18 months, and i think she is a good one.

Managed to finally stop her marking her territory all over the drive, got all the bits and bobs working as intended and put 10,000 miles on her and she still only has 61k on the clock.

She got a new ticket without any advisory and puts a smile on my face just walking up to the door.

Life would be and should be good.....except.

3 days after picking her up from the delaer she died in a car park, battery was on its way out and the delaer (yes you Pratstones ) asured me that we had a new one fitted after the initial AA engineers inspection, needless to say i had the last laugh and a brand new battery that day. 6 months in the wipers played up a little, but soon sorted.

All the work is done by some local specialists who define the term 'good old boys' and been resonably priced and what they don't know about land rovers isnt worth knowing.

So only minor fly in the ointment is with Her Ladyship, she ioves the car, but she doesnt trust it fully. And after last week i can't defend the RR.

On our way up the M1 for a visit 100 miles form home, stop in the services for a coffee and to feed the beast (Unleaded Plus please) get back in, starts first turn of the key and off we trot.

For about 15 meters when the power starts to vanish, coast into a parking spot but we are now stuck. The car turns over but wont fire, the central locking is dead, the boot wont open, the lights work but most things are dead apart from the information display which only stopped telling us bad news once it had run out of things to say.

6 hours, 1 recovery van, 2 flat beds and a threatened divorce later, the beast is with the good old boys who spend a couple of hours scratching their heads and looking at each other in a way that suggests one of us is going mad. It transpires that the main wiring harness had 'worked loose' from the fuse box in the boot, evading the massive connector lugs, the bulkhead screw holding it all in place and common sense in the process.

She is back to her purring best but the problem i have is that the wife wants shot because we have been let down (and to be fair we are getting a little long in the tooth for flat bed based days out) and she wants to go and look at a .....Lexus.

Has anybody ever had anything similar happen to their FF and how can i disuade the powers that be from a jumped up but oh so sensible Toyota and to stick with 'The Bitch' as she is now known?

Ah yes. I've had 2 of those. Thing is, it's called "Green Oval Disease" and I liken it to Hepatitis B. There's no getting rid of it, and yes it will cause you pain some days.

I'd say go and buy a Lexus, lovely cars, had a few, they do exactly what it says on the tin, always work, never break down...

If you want a comfy, well equipped car that is beautifully made and with dealer service second to none they are the one to go for...

Absolutely no soul or character though, you won't bond with it or grin when driving (well maybe when you pass an FF on the hard shoulder) you won't miss it when it's in for it's yearly service and you won't turn round to look at it when you park it up...

Seeing as life is all about how happy SWMBO is it's a small price to pay.......  Pete

I'd tell the wife it's only going to be replaced by another RR... That way she has the choice of sticking with the one you know, or buying a newer, more expensive 5.0 that might be just as bad

It's a car with character... You don't buy it for reliability! That's what I told my better half as at one point I was on first name terms with most of the AA truck drivers around here when I had P38's!

Don't get rid of it. Buy her something that's smaller, cheaper and crap, that way she'll really appreciate the Range Rover and you can keep it

Alternatively, if she insists you get rid of it, advertise it for £25k in the back of Cross Stitch Monthly... That guarantees you'll get no interested parties and be stuck with it

I commute to London most days, so have a station car.

My wife considers the FFRR to be hers and wouldn't entertain talk of having anything else

We had an SC with a few issues... including the car suffering reduced engine performance when my wife was alone on a motorway with young children in it in the early hours; and the car had - recent to that - had major works at a main dealer

Based on experience, it would appear not improbable that regarding your relationship with this particular SC, the end is nigh.

Your compromise, if not already done, might be to suggest that the car is given one last chance, based upon the extent of work done and the apparently simple reason for this latest blip?

Either way, you can proceed to buy the Lexus

Well written account of your SC purchase and events, that sinking feeling when things go wrong and the "Whats next?" thoughts creep in. Ok, so you have had a few hiccups, now think for a moment when there is a foot + of snow on the roads and SWMBO wants to go shopping or visiting, road conditions? no problem.

One winter, when I was contracting in Harlow i ended up leading a convoy of cars along the A414 with them all driving in my ruts in the snow. It was so cold ice was forming on the inside of the w/screen (car heater was crap).
I got my new one in June, they are brilliant cars much better than my classic one and much more comfortable.
Good choice of car by the way.
