Transmission overheat warning | |
Had the "bong" of despair last week. Trans overheating warning. 2002 4.4 V8
Cooled it down and drove the 110 miles home ok (at night mostly motorway and dual carriage way) without any more drama.
Checked the trans oil cooler and found it blocked.. So a look at the wiki and found the thread by Saint.V8. Perfect

As in Saints thread i also replaced the thermostat, thermostat holder and i also changed both oil lines.

I changed all the fluid and filter (filter was date stamped 2006 so someone hady been a good boy or girl and changed the fluid and filter previously.
I managed to get hold of a 20ltr drum of Mobil LT71141 trans fluid for £95..

Which meant i could give the system a complete flush.. I used one of the old lines by plugging the cooler end into the cooler and the other end into a container.
Measured the amount of fluid that came out and put the same amount back in.

Pumped the new fluid in with a 12v pump

Got the fluid up to temperature (where the IID tool comes in handy), and then topped it off as per the manual.
Surprisingly very little mess aaaand.. nothing was seized, it all came apart and went back together very easily.
