You do realise the X5 is an RR with cheaper bits?

The diesel engines are the same really, just different maps and stupid flaps added, same for the early 4.4 V8 engines in the FF as well. 2006 onward they moved further apart, the FF got a 3.6 V8, 4.2 SC and a jag 4.4 V8.

Looking on an ff from 2005< you'll see a good few part with BMW part numbers on them.

Frying pan to fire comes to mind!

FF's are often driven more considerately than the average X5(same for SSRR as well IMO)
Rear wheels toe in for fun on them from fnackered bushes, plod are using them more and more thanks to the bean counters and if you get a black one with tints best to avoid parking up at street corners for life Very Happy FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Time and time again stuff like this comes up on here.

Quote:

Ive on my FF for so many months/years now and spent £XYZ on it and its Censored spending this much money.. blah blah blah has broken and blah blah blah squeaks and annoys me.
Im bored of it and cant afford to throw more money at it so went with a (insert kraut/Scandavian/Jap/Yank Manufacturer Make and model here), see you all soon as i enjoy my reliable new motor.

Hi guys, well XX months/years later i just cant get on with my new reliable car. Its simply not an RR and i dont enjoy having something to moan about/repair on it. Whats the best one to get these days please for my budget of £XYZ.

I sometimes come on here and think Im in the matrix, going up some stairs and i've seen the same black cat twice....

Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

My point being is this.
You spend a wodge repairing it and then sell it on just as its getting more reliable and a new member will pop up with it in a short while saying they got a nice cheap rangey with tons done to it recently and then more than likely only have a few tiny niggles over normal servicing for a good while, if any faults at all. They end up with a nice sorted FF without all the hassle Smile

Horses for courses but if it were me i couldn't be bothered with changing to and fro. Keep ti, sort the faults and enjoy Smile A good specialist will point out what needs doing and if you end up spending £1k on issues after they assess it then so be it, its less to worry about Very Happy FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Here are my tips to owning and enjoying a FFRR...

Fit genuine parts. Mr. Green Why? because they fit perfectly first time and work as they should. Thumbs Up

Don't fit aftermarket parts. Shocked Why? because they don't fit correctly and don't stand the test of time. Shocked Buy cheap and fit twice, or thrice... Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry

As soon as a fault/noise/quirk/problem starts, investigate and repair as soon as possible. Do not let it 'develop' Whistle

If it worked properly 2 days ago, but threw a wobbly yesterday and works perfectly today then something is wrong and it requires attention. Don't ignore the warning signs. Investigate and repair the fault before it breaks altogether. Embarassed

p.s.
Don't forget that every time you're driving your FFRR that it could break down, but then so could any other make/model of vehicle

Happy FFRR motoring Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Im thinking of getting rid of the Rangie and getting a BMW X5, something like a diesel 3.0 sport with all the toys.

Haven't fully decided on fuel type yet so maybe a V8 petrol will be better but Im looking for some common faults etc as a heads up.

I know the 2005 diesels use the same 3.0 straight 6 as the TD6 but is the gearbox the same and if so is it as Censored weak as the TD6 box ?

Any info is appreciated.
. So after reading this thread in detail I have concluded that the RR is better off road and due to BMW sticking to the awful Run Flat tyres the RR is nicer to drive on road ! Clearly the winner is Range Rover ...........I think.

I am no longer fanatical about them, you are right but there's a stack of people before me who have arrived at the same conclusions. You've done your fair share of moaning about them as well, still a fan ?? Rolling Eyes

I'm not getting into a "you said" v "he said" but I have had a couple of issues and moans, yes. I too explored the options of an alternative earlier in the year, but for my needs and what it does - there isn't a current replacement that I like more.

Am I a fan....yes, hugely but being a fan is a clouded, rose tinted look as it's an emotional choice...like being a football team 'fan'....I love my range rover, but it occasionally infuriates me...

Having had 3 discovery's and the range rover - with other brands in between, it still makes me smile and still does the job I bought it to do. IF a change was on the cards and to move away from a range rover, I'd take a serious look at the german fleet but also a serious look at a disco 4 as they are very versatile.

Aside from the driving position I think a 4wd could be something you regret, regardless of the make....and for the same money, as I previously said, you get a lot of big saloon/estate? Thumbs Up Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........

A friend's wife has had several X5s and likes the way they drive. He says they are "useless on snow and ice" and the runflat tyres are very expensive and seem to wear out quickly, perhaps due to the extra hard sidewalls required. The wheels seem easily kerbed.
I think they have been pretty reliable and not had corrosion problems, better than my RRs.
I've been a passenger in them on farm tracks and they bounced about with nowhere near the RR's serene progress in similar conditions. I also thought them a bit small, with poor legroom in the front (I'm 6'3"). The older 3.0 engine sounded a bit strained and I thought lacked power, the more recent one much better.
I'd never consider one, but then I value off road capacity. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Only experience from a visual perspective - think they are ugly.

SWMBO describes them as a car that looks like it is wearing a nappy filled with poo due to the shape of the boot. Rolling with laughter

My neighbor has had both a Bi turbo X5 and a 6 pot petrol, he said that they were both good cars, BUT, he'd have a Range Rover any day. They will out preform off road, towing, winter roads, ride quality...... and the list goes on Shocked The only thing an X5 does better than a ffrr is power, cos we were shafted by BMW, that's it. If you want to tare around and look like a gangster get an X5, if you want to drive something very special stick with a Range Rover.

I haven't driven an X5, I've grown up Laughing , but I have driven untold Landcruisers (sorry wash my mouth Shocked) and they are OK, they have a nice ride, pull like a steam train when towing, cost a bloody fortune to repair when they go wrong, and they do Shocked . And if you were to offer me a straight swop for my ffrr, I'd politely decline. They are cheap nasty places to travel in, the ride is harsh compared to the ffrr, even though they use the same suspension set up as a Rolls Royce. They aren't agile off road, they tend to bludgeon the terrain in to submission, with all the damage that results. And they have very heavy road manners......... Range Rover, better built, better finish, and commands way more respect..........

I have never been asked why am I towing a Mobile Toilet with a Toyota....... Had lots of comments that the ffrr is too good for my line of work, and I reply Crap! Shocked Rolling with laughter Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

BMW X5

Hello this is my first post.
I have just sold my 2003 BMW X5 3.0 l sport and bought a 2005 rr 4.4v8 best move I ever made
The BMW gearbox was a nightmare it would not go into drive when cold had to put it into tiptronic first drive forward then put it back into drive and then it would work. Had my garage look at it and they said it might be the rubber rings in the gear box that are leaking and letting the oil through but it would be a big job to replace. Also the three yellow lights on th dash came on and it was the steering wheel angle sensor but yet again big job to get to whole dash out job. It ate battery's change the alternator but no joy. Suspension faults. Radio screen going on and of. Expansion tank blowing on me on a roundabout and that was no joke could not move it until it cooled down completely AA came and he towed it to my garage he said it was a very common thing to go as they use a very cheap plastic tank and they just split. Pulley bearing went so had to have them done as there was a almighty screening noise when running. And rubbish in the ice and snow. They may be 4wd but very dumb witted system once you loose traction it's game over.
Now I have my RR everything is good. Thumbs Up

My mate has a 2008 X5 sport. - the ride is shocking!!!! Might as well be sat on a stack of pallets sliding down a rock face. The rear seats are also VERY uncomfortable. His does not have a pano roof and it feels very claustrophobic. The dash is cheap looking and the front end looks like a frog on heat. It lacks power and struggles on occasion towing a twin axle tin tent up steady long inclines - apart from that its ok. Whistle

With respect to towing as my FF has not had the oil drain pipe mod I cant overtake him towing our tin tent for fear of creating a dense cloud of hell behind me so I dont take the pi** out of him. Evil or Very Mad 405 AB exec seats Baltic and Cirrus
