Misery of looking for a 3.6 tdv8 on a budget

Hi guys
Think this site is brilliant. We have been looking for a 3.6 tdv8 for some time now and just beginning to feel totally disillusioned with the whole thing. It has long been my hubbys dream to own one plus we need it for towing our twin axle. we are very much at the cheap end looking for something under 15k we have looked at several within 90 minutes drive on autotrader but when we get there most are rough. We have kept our search to mileage under a 100k and avoided dealers with bad reps all together! It seems ironic we sourced our last car a nissan elgrand import in a couple weeks and yet we can't find a vogue in months of searching. I am wondering do we have to accept our budget is too low or are we looking in the wrong place. Prices seem to be going up significantly since May when I first started looking. We very very nearly bought one a while back that was perfect except it's wheel arches were gone and would have had to have the rot cut out. I just couldn't reconcile myself with spending 14K and having such a big job on our hands. But kind of regretting it now as we've seen nothing close to it since.
I've even started looking a disco 3's much to my hubbys horror Big Cry but seriously beginning to wonder if we're ever going to find one. Anyone else feeling the same?

Hang in there - that seems like quite a reasonable budget - I'm sure you'll find something Thumbs Up

There are more sub £17k 3.6's around and so I agree, hang in there a bit longer. Winter is here and prices can stay solid but you may find something. Couple of things;

Great towcar; our twin axle is a solid tow
D3...not a bad choice, very very capable....our twin axle was solid behind that too !

Thumbs Up Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........

TBH if it were me i'd change to an SC and pocket the savings for maintenance and fuel.

If you buy at £15 you really really want a bumper to bumper warranty as under 100k means less than 15k a year so unlikely to have had many long runs and such to keep the engine clear. Just my thoughts but at the cheaper end of the scale you'll end up spending more in the long run on bits and bobs and things that drop off... FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Yes, we're starting to see TDV8s come in under 10k now so 15 is a very reasonable budget.

Perhaps try a site sponsor Gary Elliot Prestige Cars (Gazellio) who is well respected on here as being a purveyor of good vehicles. If he doesn't have one he certainly knows where to look and can source one quite easily.

Don't get too hung up on mileage. Service history and condition is far more important and TBH, at 100k miles a lot of 3.6 TDV8s are looking down the barrel of quite a few issues unless they've been very well maintained (or fixed already)

One possible (over budget) candidate here. Looks like a nice car TBH. Haggle the price down a bit to cover a good warranty. Nice low miles too.

I wouldn't KP. I do have the 5.0 S/C and whilst it's very capable and nicer as an everyday driver it doesn't have the low down torque for towing. My (rather heavy) Coachman T/A was easier to tow with my old 3.6 for sure.

That is quite true but a flick of the stick and you can hold the gears for all you need or use low box Smile

It also gives more options of vehicles for the money depending on the range your willing to travel as well.

Less parts to go wrong is by far the best way to describe an SC Smile and the fuel for them is cheaper per litre at the minute Very Happy FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

For your budget you will be looking at an 07, maybe an 08 plate, I would drop the 100k mileage criteria and buy on condition and history only

I'd much rather buy a car from a form member who has maintained it with a local specialist than one with a main dealer service history - only personal experience, but I purchased my TDV8 over 3 years ago at 70k miles, now on 112k and having been properly maintained (inc preventative maintenance) by local specialists ever since, it has been 100% reliable.

Wheel arches an tailgate rust are common problems - mine has both. Will cost approx £1,200 for a new tailgate, arches and spraying to fully fix when I eventually get round to it. Only people keeping the car will spend the money to have this done as they will not make it back on sale, hence you will probably see lots with these issues.

Prices only likely to hold steady (or increase if we have a very cold winter) until about Feb when the weather starts getting better.

Good luck 2007 Zermatt Silver TDV8 Vogue SE - now sold but was a great car!

ive got a 2007 tdv8 84k miles in fantastic condition inside and out , I'm was thinking about selling in January and the price would be 14k if you are interested . It was the best car I looked at from approx. 20 . The gearbox is perfect and I had the gearbox serviced this year .

the wheels are the 21 in Storm alloys off the RRsport and have not affected my insurance

Apart from a possible new rear height sensor for £25 the car is perfect

Ive replaced the side tubes with side steps

This. It took me a while to get over the magic 100k miles in my head, and so glad I did. I bought one with 141k on it, and it's been splendid. I've pushed it up to 143k now and it's not missed a beat. I changed the diff oil front and rear, and it's just about to have it's 6 monthly oil change. Now my only issue is that it sits on the drive and doesn't get used for days on end Big Cry

Thanks mzplcg, we were advised by a local specialist to stick to a 3.6 but good to hear your experience. We asked Evans Halsaw if they'd accept a lower offer but they weren't interested and pointed out that the price didn't include their admin fee etc so no go there but worth an ask Very Happy

evans hallshaw , absolute scum and con artists. loads of really bad reviews for them on the net

I exposed them for not completing work they charged me for and went to watchdog with it . Charged for parts that I had marked with a permenant marker. later admitted to it and 2 people lost their jobs at the dealership .
