New battery fitted - various issues!

Hi All,

I noticed that my old Bosch battery was faulty and not holding power - it was causing all sorts of abnormalities e.g. the memory seats were having a mind of their own and occasionally the battery was getting so low that warning lights were coming on (HDC/Air Susp inactive). My indy checked the alternator and for battery drain and they were fine. So I had this replaced by a Varta Silver but the car was completely dead within a couple of hours of fitting the new battery, so I returned this battery as being faulty and fitted a new Varta.

With this new battery, the car was fine for 5 days, and then I had it booked in to get 'detailed' on Monday morning (it takes all week). The detailer phoned me at lunchtime to say that he had reversed the car into his workshop in the morning without any issues, but a few hours later the engine wouldn't start at all.

I phoned my indy thinking there must be a fault, and he says that if the detailer had started the engine a few times, moved it and it hasn't had much run, then the whole battery can drain in a short period. Right enough, I went out and jump started the car, plugged it into the charger and it's been fine since.

Is this normal that the best can drain a battery so quickly? It's a brand new Varta Silver, the alternator is fine, and we've checked that nothing else is draining it... Thoughts appreciated! Smile

when i had my tints done the chap kept on opening and closing the rear windows with the ignition left on and flattened my battery which was fully charged , as in your case a quick battery charge and all was well again..


i'd double check the connections to make sure they are tight though.. ... - .- -.

I have flattened my own battery while cleaning the car - all doors open and interior lights were on.

Later I found out how to turn off interior lights (press and hold the switch for a few seconds seems to do it) - no more flat battery. Very Happy

One reason why i run my engine when i give the FF a good inside and out clean as it takes a few hours and means i can have the old wireless on listening to music as i clean, and i can lower it to make the roof easier and lift it to clean the arches out and underside Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

For the past 8 years I have always cleaned the car with the engine running


PS you better buy batteries with a warranty, so you get 2 for the price of one - in a 2002 it will not last longer than a year

ps as you're one has been dead, you need a new one

Many thanks all for your responses - sounds like it's typical of the car rather than mine having some sort of ominous fault. I've got a C-Tek charger and have lent it to the detailer to use while he works on the car.

I'll give it a full charge when I get it back tomorrow night and hopefully that will keep me going for a while.

Or change all your interior lights for LED's I regularly work all day on mine with the doors constantly opening and closing so the lights are on most of the day and I have no problems at all, also doesn't cost you a fortune burning fuel when washing it....

Also sit on the tailgate all evening when we go green laning, using the interior lights to light up the area for hours with no problems....

Don't buy the kits they sell as apparently some won't fit, I just took all the bulbs out and measured the festoons and noted the type for the rest of them and bought the cheapest I could find from china and got a few spares, have to say 90% are still working fine after about 18mths... cost peanuts.... you don't need canbus ones for any of the interior lights...

Ones to change
2x front overhead
2x front map (optional)
2x rear overhead
2x rear map (optional)
2x front footwell
2x front door
2x rear door
1x boot side
2x boot hatch Pete

I use my cTek on "power" mode which just runs the car when doors etc are left open.

Haylands - I don't suppose you have a list of all the lads required for an internal switch over do you. Something I'd like to do...

Problem

Oh dear... It goes from bad to worse...

So the detailer charged it up two days ago until the C-Tek was saying it was fully charged. He then took it off charge but hasn't turned started the engine since then, as he's just been working on the paintwork. I went to collect it today but it was dead. I've had to PUSH it out his workshop so I can go and jump start it later.

Can a fully charged battery die in two days if the engine has never been started? All the interior lights are already LEDs. I guess he may have had the doors open at some points since taking it off charge as he's treated all the leather and cleaned the interior. It's also worth noting that he left the car unlocked for two days when it was in his garage... Does leaving it locked leave any systems running or anything??

Getting worried, as the garage have said the alternator is ok and that there is no external drain on the battery. Two brand new batteries have died within days... Is this normal?! 2002 Range Rover Td6 Vogue

It's very possible the battery has drained in two days if he was opening and closing doors all the time. Every time a door is opened the system awakens and takes 20 minutes or so to go to sleep again.

If it was left unlocked but no doors opened then it would not drain the battery, only opening and closing doors could do this. I never locked my FFRR, in fact I could leave it in the garage for 4 or 5 weeks unlocked and it always started as there was no alarm draining the battery and no doors being opened

If he left the key in (or near) the ignition switch all the time the immobiliser stays alive and drains the battery.

Help!

Help!

I went to the detailers last night and hooked the RR up to my 2.0d Volvo, after 20 minutes I fired it up and it was fine. Drove the Range Rover home, parked it in my driveway and connected it to my C-Tek charger.

After a 17 hour charge, I have just gone out to the car and looked at the meter - it shows the following:



The car wont start and the lights flicker when I open the door. In fact, the siren wailed for a moment when I initially pressed unlock.

I'm increasingly losing my faith with the car... This is the third battery in two weeks. I'm at a loss as to what I should do next now...
