The camping season will return next year and my Halfords cheapo electric coolbox struggles to keep my beer cold. Now in a few weeks someone will ask me what do I want for Christmas (yes its not that far away) and I'm thinking a better camping fridge might be the answer - what's recommended? I seem to remember that they cost a few hundred quid not £39.95 like my Halfords one. Geoff

It works great. 12v from the car or 240v from house(comes with an inverter).

It is expensive but works fantastic. Can maintain -18C in 30C ambient temperature. We use it when camping etc. It also is far less power hungry than the Halfords ones.
I had a dual battery in my last car. Halfords fridge used to drain the spare it overnight. When I got this one the battery was still near fully charged after a few days.

Terrafirma aren't the best of names but the compressor parts are made by a far better company. Waeco and Engel are also good but more expensive.

I got this one to test out the system for caravanning as we need to keep our dog food frozen for 2 weeks at a time on holiday.

It is expensive but well worth it. I just wish I had bought a larger one now as we have 3 dogs now not 2 so more food needs packed.

Yep looks good to me, just what I want, I assume it is tall enough to take wine bottles, best price I can find is £425. I might just get one anyway I mean I have at least 60 or 70 days until Christmas to think of something else. I will just wait and see what others think and see if anyone spots it at a better price.

Loads on the D3/4 forum have these style for when they're away etc. Big Australian thing too to keep their tinnies cold.

Got a proper fridge freezer in the caravan but could't be without this now.

I've got a Mercedes fridge, it doesn't go down to -18°C (too cold for wine and beer unless you like drinking ice), won't take a wine bottle standing upright but will if it's lying down and it keep the beers cool enough, all for only £150 here

Mrs has checked and a 2litre bottle of Coke stands upright with lid closed.

Take a look at the Waeco range. We have one that we use when away (12v while travelling and gas on site - lives in the awning) plus we use it in the garden as a BBQ beer fridge and it lives in the conservatory as a back up/wine cooler.

Had it 8 years and never had a problem. Wasn't cheap (£299) but "buy cheap, buy twice" !

Geoff, buddy, I've been nosing around and it would appear that the high performance low power consumption fridges are 12V Compressor fridges. If it says it can also warm up your food leave well alone as it's a Peltier plate unit and they require a fair bit of juice. ARB are making them as well, but they are at ARB money

I wouldn't use anything other than an Engel.

They're reassuringly expensive when new (and worth every penny, in my view) but can be found secondhand for a lot less.

I've owned a 40 litre model (previously very well-travelled) for 7 years and it's served brilliantly in my 110 on many trips across Europe.

Can I just point out that there are 3 types of fridge, and they all have different properties. Fridge / warmer unit is a Peltier plate unit and will heat as well as cool, but they can only change the ambient temperature by 15 degrees approx. Great in the winter, not so good when the starting temp is 30

The second type is the 3 way, that uses a thermal process and by heating the refrigerant on the outside it reduces the temp on the inside. These are the the most common type to be found in a caravan, they work well, but they are power hungry, and can be the the main cause of a flat leisure battery ( 20 odd amps consumption ) But you can run them on gas, which is great for off grid camping, no good in the car

And then there are the compressor type fridges, these are the type that are used in the home, because they are the most efficient. But when you shrink it all down in to a box that will fit in the boot of a car, the price tends to shoot up But they are the most efficient of all 3 types and they offer the the biggest temperature change for the smallest power consumption ( small amps but big £'s ) Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!
