I'm currently on the look out to get my first Range Rover and I'm leaning towards a couple I've seen. I'm only able to buy an earlier one since I need to have a bit of spare cash for the inevitable repairs.

One of them is a 2005 Vogue which has the newer entertainment system (touch screen). It's still a TD6 and is in good condition with a full service history including a recent turbo change and a replacement gearbox a couple of years back. The last owner had the car for nearly 4 years and seems to have spent a fair but on repairs and will cop me with a 1 year warranty. The downside... it's got nearly 180,000 miles which is pretty high but given that it's been looked after I'm wondering if maybe that isn't necessarily a reason not to buy.

Or is a 180,000 mile car a ticking time bomb with a short fuse???

With 180k on it things like the air compressor, suspension struts and just normal bushes will be needing doing at some point in the next few years.

Replacement turbo and gearbox is a good sign, keep oil changes at between 6-10k, get the gearbox fluid changed as well as the diffs and transfer box, coolant and brake fluid and it should see you right for a good while longer as there are many 3.0 BMW's with the similar engine with more miles on the clock and same gearbox as well.

Infotainment is a pain as its not easily upgradable but a company near brum is doing an aftermarket upgrade for £300 to enable digi tv, MP3 input and such like via USB et al.

Check for rust on the tailgate and arches. Most will have it, if not had it and been treated(my second bootlid from LR is rusting after only 4years) and its not a biggy, bank £150 for arches and rubbers to protect them and £200 for bootlid. FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Thanks for the advice, sounds like it may be worth taking a second look at the car (checking the areas you have indicated carefully).

With regards to the infotainment system. The only things I think I might like to add/change are that I don't know if it has Bluetooth phone capabilities and I would ideally like to add DAB radio. Not worried about streaming music to it if the CD changer can play MP3 recorded discs.

Can you PM me the name of the Brum company you mentioned (I'm assuming putting here might contravene some forum rule)?

a search an gaybay for range rover digital should bring said company up.

If it has the Satnav it will have Bluetooth, albeit the older Nokia unit.

Annoyingly there is no way to upgrade the standard system to an OE style of DAB. its just aftermarket

Now LR say they wont commit time and effort to help develop and denon et al say JLR wont give them permission to develop replacement units, IE replace the CD Changer with a smaller HDD unit with USB input, or a replacement exchange service on the radio unit to enable dab... Its a PITA but the way LR want it to try and push you into a newer vehicle.

Someone will do it aftermarket one day when they spend time decompiling the system and make a small fortune as i know some EU Countries cant have the standard DVB setup for example and around the world owners are wanting proper phone integration and even newer bloody maps as the latest we can get is 2012 which is really 2011.... FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

So that confirms what I was slightly concerned about - OEM DAB units you see on fleabay for the RR Sport cannot be used on the L322 which is a shame. I guess I'll have to find as discreet an aftermarket unit as I can. I guess this is one advantage of the earlier BMW iBus based system which I'm familiar with having had a couple of beemers in the past with it.

Also interesting to hear that there are no new update maps for the system... LR have missed an opportunity I think.

Ziggy, I am just approaching 180k on mine (4.4 Petrol BMW V and had no real probs. It's not the mileage, it's how well it's been looked after.

Mine has just swanned through its MOT, had a £230 service and runs beautifully. With the TD6 (my previous one) its a different matter as the gearboxes the main culprit, but if it's made it thus far, shouldn't be a problem (my former FFRR was a 2002 TD6 and is still going strong at 138k).

Thanks, that's quite reassuring. Given that, I think I've almost decided on getting the car subject to a final look over tomorrow in daylight.

Well I went and had another really good look over her and spent a good hour and a half including using a borrowed code reader to check for any error codes. There were a couple of old ones which we cleared and then checked again after the test drive and they didn't recur.

There is a very small patch of rust just starting to bubble on the nearside rear arch but my pal who does bodywork thinks it can be dealt with without too much cost.

Drove her again and she seemed fine. All the electrics worked fine and she's very clean and dry underneath with no obvious leaks so deposit paid!!

Picked her up yesterday and very happy.

I've only done around 50 miles so far but everything seems to work fine.

Next job is to get hold of a diagnostic tool, I'm leaning towards getting the IID Tool as that seems to offer the best balance of features against cost for the L322 from what I've read.

I have the Faultmate system and while it wasn't cheap has offered me access to everything and then some!

Looking around over the weekend, others which seem to be good for the L322 are the iiD Tool and the Nanocom apparently.

I'll look carefully into all 3 before choosing.

I must admit I haven't checked to see if my nav can be programmed when moving...
