Day off from family tomorrow - but not sure what to do

I have a free pass day tomorrow - but frankly so long since I have had time off to myself not sure what to do.

Located just South of Manchester on M6 (J17) - want to do bloke type thing - something that frankly would probably have bored SWMBO and dear daughter.

Any ideas welcome.

If I stay doing stuff at home (eg working on RR I know I will end up doing other jobs around the home - so getting out is best option

thanks. Howard

Hi Pete - yes a drive through the Peak district - not done the fabulous road from Leek to Buxton for ages - was featured on Top Gear once as a top driving road.

However now solved the problem with...

Combined Nimrod & Concorde Technical Tour at Manchester Airport Visitor centre

Been wanting to do this for years and it would have bored SWMBO and Daughter if they had to come with me - so perfect for just me.

Apparently the guys that run the tour are very knowledgeable on the technical aspects - so for a geek like me it is perfect - bring it on Thumbs Up Howard

Sounds good, you should get all the details.... like on full chat Concorde used over 6,700 gallons of fuel per HOUR, nearly as much as an FF SC.... Shocked Shocked Pete

Currently building a garage for a chap who was one of the engineers who worked on the original Concorde project. Very interesting and knowledgable chap. Thumbs Up There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

My first job was working n insurance in London. Chairman was Sir Geoffrey Edgerton Knight. Leading light in the Concorde world and I believe penned a few books on the subject. When I met him , he was being collected at home by chauffeur driven s class , driven to his club Boodles , and then onto the office for 1/2 hour to show his face then home.

Concorde was an awesome piece of engineering.

I managed a free upgrade onto it - when they started flying again after the Paris crash and before they announced they were retiring them, there were lots of deals to be had.

It was an amazing experience - sitting there thinking about how fast you were moving was surreal - as was looking out of the window and seeing the curvature of the earth - 60,000 feet is a very different experience - no turbulence at that height Thumbs Up

You are a lucky man!
-not just because you have a Concorde experience, and anything else that might tickle your fancy,

-but because you have a day off!

I had a chance to choose what to do on my birthday.... It coincided with a jaguar spares day, (national sort of meeting). Ooh, bending down looking at old junk, rummaging through dirty stuff, chatting with fellow sad people. -what more could a bloke want? And there was beer too.
I was told to think again!

Scotland 2008 Range Rover Vogue TDV8 Stornoway Grey

When I worked at Gatwick, BA used, from time to time, to fly Concorde on service from there to places like Faro as a publicity exercise. As she was based at Heathrow it required positioning flights. When it happened they would offer places to the various companies and services based in Gatwick. I was privileged to get one such trip.

They laid on coaches to ferry us to Heathrow with a packed breakfast.

We were only airborne for about 40 minutes but nonetheless a great experience. As there was no luggage on board she was relatively light and the acceleration on take off was something else.

Mention made above of the amount of fuel consumed. In that respect one thing that really stuck in my mind was that, to maintain trim, it was necessary to pump the fuel back and forward. The capacity of the pumps, as I remember, was mindboggling moving large quantities in very short time. John

Well the visit was very enjoyable. Thanks for all your comments above.

@JohnBoyAirey - I had a similar situation on my Birthday - and I was kinda thinking whose birthday was it? Anyway in general SWMBO is very good and tolerates things with good humour - she was the one who suggested I got the FFRR in the first place Very Happy Bow down Bow down Can't ask for much more than that.

£30 gets you a combined tech tour on both aircraft about 2.5 hours long and free car parking all day so afterwards saw the huge Emirates A380-800 (double decker affair) taking off. Good value and John on The Nimrod tour was excellent.

Going to share some photos for those who have not been - starting with some Nimrod and FF photos ....

Concorde to follow ...

as a kid, seeing Concorde flying over, it's a still facinating site to just stare at this majesty of an aircraft. and to think that you could actually get on and sit in luxury, onboard a flight. sadly it never happened for me.
remembering my youth, and airfix models etc....i used to dream of seeing an SR-71 blackbird one day, as these were (to me) the american equivilent of ultra-modern super sonic aircraft. (ie a pencil, sticking out of a paper dart!) although i would have had to be in concorde, flying in same direction, just to see it!
i have had the opportunity to do the brooklands concorde experience though. -its great,

concorde take off, with visible afterburners.... &index=65&list=PL820B33FABA61ADE7
