Key not working

Hi, when I bought my 2009 Range rover autobiography it came with only one key. The type with a hidden blade for emergency access, it has keyless start. This made me a bit nervous, so I popped down to the dealership and ordered a new key. £300 !! £260 for the key and £40 for the blade! Anyway, whilst waiting for the key to come, the garage where I bought the car phoned me and said that he had found a spare key for the car. I picked it up but it didnt work. At around the same time I got a call from the main dealer saying my new key had arrived. So, I went along to the dealer to get my new key programmed to my car and at the same time asked them to see if they could reprogramme the other key that didnt work. After about 45 minutes I was told that the key that didnt work, trully didnt work and could not be re-programmed. And the new key they had bought in would not work either unless I now bought some other device costing a further £150. Somthing to do with security apparently. Why wasnt I told this when I first purchased the key?! So to get a new key looks like its going to cost me £450!
My question is to the more knowledgeable out there, is, are they taking the Censored ? The key that I was given by the garage that was origionaly with my car, but now doesnt work, why would it suddenly not work? Ok the battery was dead, but surely it just needs reprogramming? If I can get that working I wont bother with the one from the dealer and save £450.
Sorry if this sounds all a bit confusing!

£300 sounds steep to start with - my L405 key was a lot less than that Shocked

I'd want to know exactly what the other £150 was for - "something to do with security" just isn't good enough

The 2009 onwards cars are a bit awkward to program and as far as I know there is no way other than through the OBD port. However, I have never heard any mention of this "Security Device" your main dealer is talking about.

Also, it has been known for main dealers to not fully understand the (limited) diagnostics they have, or how to use them properly. The MD diag machine is not as capable as certain aftermarket items like IID tool or Faultmate. You might do well to try and find a specialist who uses one of these. I know there was a member on here who had a multi-vehicle version and he was down your way - ish.

But the keys are generic when new. You need to cut the blade obviously and then the key must be programmed to the car, that's it. There isn't anything else I know of other than erasing the redundant keys first. Max of 3 keys I think, might be 4. Shouldn't cause you any problems unless someone else has been programming keys before and filled it up.
