Noise update

A bit louder this morning (but still brief) - and sounded like cogs not meshing! Only on accelerating in 1st gear and not whilst 'changing gear'. Current: 2004 Vogue 4.4 V8 - 2004 Discovery 2

Mobil lt71141 ONLY, there are no alternatives no matter what garages tell you, they will have the same specifications and will say they are an equivalent but they do not have the same additives that the 71141 has...

If you have anything else, and it's usually pretty easy to see as the correct stuff is engine oil coloured and most ATF is red, then you will need a power flush or something similar to get it all out...

It takes about 5-6lrts on a drop and fill, a lot stays inside, the box holds about 10ltrs IIRC... Pete

Another Update

I've done 10,000 miles since having the gearbox oil changed to the 'correct' fluid and it's been fine. The 'metallic whirring sound' I've also stopped: I decided to check my own gearbox oil level using my iid tool to check temp - I managed to get the best part of a litre in, the result being no more 'whirring' sound!!! Thinking about the oil change my own garage did, I wondered how they managed to drain, fill, drain, fill etc whilst maintaining the correct temp in such a small space of time?? Sometime I wonder if there are any garages you can totally trust to do the job right!!

I've a different problem now, the subject of another thread: 4.4 Petrol fuel pump 😏 Current: 2004 Vogue 4.4 V8 - 2004 Discovery 2
