Running Nexens Roadian HP's (255/50 20") at the moment. 2 are 14mths old other 2 are 12 months, so no more than 10K miles on them, and they still have good even tread.

My bones are telling me it's going to be a hard winter....we are about 800 ft above sea level.

I am sure the Nexens will be ok as they were lest year but don't know whether it was worth £700 on 4 Pirelli Scorps (summer) or £800 on Vreds.

Local place can't source Pirelli Winters which would have been good.

Still feel that in low box and taking it canny we should be fine as even in 2009 and 2010 we were and I had an RRS then on the Conti Crosses which were pretty smooth at the time.

Think I've answered my own question writing it all down..... But worth a poll anyway!

I had Pirelli Scorpions fitted to my FFRR in the harsh winter of 2010/11 and they never once lost grip. I've just fitted a set of Michelin CrossClimate to the Subaru as they get great reviews, so far they feel good, low road noise and grippy, just waiting on your bone theory to come to fruition to test them to the max

I do think mechanical physics and taking it canny and see you thru a lot. I realise that the softer compound will help on the tyres but I'd rather keep the £100's in the bank....at least it's there for the paint repairs when I end up in the field due to my Nexens!

I have been looking at sets as well. They are well priced if they are happy to wrap them on a pallet - which they may not. But thanks for the info.

Vreds are OK but I would go online and order a set of Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow (Pirelli Winter I think they're called now). Those are what I use in the winter and they've never let me down.

Any summer tyre is going to struggle once it gets below freezing

I have a set of 19" Scorpion winters in the garage at the moment and I'm looking for a set of 19" rims for them so they can go on the car, I have a set of the older vogue wheels from my 3.6 but they won't fit the 4.4, and apparently there is only one type which will...... and they will be going back on the disco when I get 5 mins... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
