trans failsafe program

hi all, this is my first post so be gentle with me. I have a 2002 td6 which when doing a lot of stop start driving goes into trans failsafe. I checked the code and it shows a gear 3 monitor fault but strangely if I drive it in manual mode it works fine. i'm hoping somebody might be able to help me out with this problem as I am looking to sell the car and it's the only thing wrong with it.

hi stan
done the search thing, felt like I was going round in circles, was just hoping someone could give me a definitive answer for my particular problem. I am assuming the gearbox is ok, as it works fine in manual mode, so could it simply be an electrical problem?

They don't like low voltage and when you do stop start it takes a lot of power out of the battery and can cause all sorts of errors
