The TV licensing site says differently though,

from the paragraph i posted above;

Quote:
However, if you plug one of these devices into the mains and use it to watch live TV away from home, you need to be covered by a separate TV Licence at that address

Exactly - and I doubt they'd actually bother enforce it.

I'm not sure they even have detector vans any more. (I seem to remember seeing something on the One Show about it) I think they used to pick up the electronic signature given off by CRT screens, which i'm sure worked well in the 1970's as in most homes the only CRT screen was a TV. Would have been more difficult to differentiate with the spread of PC's in later years. I'm not sure if they can detect LCD's in the same way, but there are at least 10 of those in this house and only 2 of them are TV's.

I would think these days they just use the database and knock on doors of people who say they don't have a TV licence to see if they catch them with a TV on. I suppose they might even point a directional mic at the house and see if they can hear Coronation Street or Eastenders.

I used to know a bunch of people who worked for the GPO in the 70's and 80's. the detector vans did work way back in the day, but in the 80's they weren't maintained and as far as I recall there wasn't a single working one in the fleet. the licence work used to be performed by the PO counter and office staff on overtime in the early evening and they just used a database of who did not have a licence. they would go to the door, look for the flicker and then knock and make the challenge. most people aren't sharp enough to talk their way away from the evidence and so were done. I remember one over zealous chap get into a fight with the home owner who denied he had a tv and they ended up throttling each other.
the tech does exist to detect a working tuner but no one in TV Licencing uses it. they just play the database game to catch out old ladies and busy mums.

This must be the only country in the world where if I go buy a TV, take it home and set it all up, some bloke from a government agency can knock my door and demand money. Was never the case when I lived Stateside. Mind you, the TV there was even crappier than Sky Laughing

To be fair moSt countries with state broadcasters they're funded or subsidised through general taxation along with advertising anyway, so you're still paying a fee for your TV and radio it's just it doesn't have a name.

Channel 4 is also funded in part by the TV license along similar lines to other countries.

Put it this way, you home licence will cover you for your TV in your caravan. This would most likely be plugged into the mains. How would you apply for a license for a touring caravan in any case. As it would be on a different site each time! There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Just had a read up to find out where i'd heard it was. Apparently (according to wikipedia) there was talk of it receiving licence fee funding in about 2007 when they were struggling, but in the end it didn't happen. Their digital switch over costs were met by the licence fee, but their day to day funding is indeed from advertising. Smile So that's probably where i got it from.

As it said in the paragraph from the TV licensing site i posted above, TV's in vehicles, ships etc are exempt from the point about being plugged into the mains. But it's a bit unclear if you'd need a licence at your home address if your only TV was in a vehicle (a touring caravan would obviously be a vehicle).

I used to sell T.Vs years ago. Every TV that we sold, we had to fill out a form and send it to the licensing dept.

I was told that if a house did not have a licence, a detector van would go round the area and an official would visit the house in question to challenge the resident. However, they would actually have to go into the house and see a TV being used for the evidence to be accepted in court. Most people do not challenge the charge in court and just pay up the fine.

A friend of mine did not allow the inspector into his house, however he did receive a court summons. He duly turned up at court and watched as each offender was named and the charges were read out. Each statement was identical i.e. "I went to the address and noted a TV in use etc etc. When my friends was called up, claimed he did not have a TV and he challenged the inspector to say what make his TV was. The charge was dismissed!

Regarding Chanel 4, the Welsh version S4C (Sianel Pedwar Cymru, meaning "Channel Four Wales") as well as advertising revenue, receives about £100m a year from government sources (DCMS). It also carries some programs produced for it by BBC Wales free of charge. No longer FF owner but still interested. Present car Jaguar XE

Found my b/w Casio portable TV at the weekend:

Turns on but as there is no analogue signal any more, it doesn't tune.

That's a great old bit of kit. Bizarre that you have to look at the picture through a mirror.
They were the days, not. Laughing

Interesting that this 1936 TV set used a similar mirror lid:

Quite stylish for it's day. Slimline too as there is no CRT sticking out of the back. Question is though, is the picture in reverse when looking through the mirror?
