Wheel/tyre choice TD6 – 20 to 18s or stick?

I have a TD6 and I also have 20” alloys on my car and while they are nice my car will be used in the winter as a back up rescue vehicle and may do a little light countryside (across fields) off-roading with possibly a little snow and flood work involved as well (I live at the foot of a mountain range) I also keep getting told that the ride comfort will be better with the factory 18” wheels

Now obviously if I want to fit 50/50 tyres there will be some road noise (I’ll turn the stereo up then) but I was wondering what would be the best tyre to put on for off road use if I kept the 20” wheels? I assume something with a bigger tyre wall but what would be the maximum size I could use without any rubbing/fouling issues? and also price is factor (isn't it always) I will get a little financial assistance to buy them but not a lot (as its a volunteer thing)

I’d be willing to swap my 20’s with somebody else’s 18 with decent tyres but I am in Northern Ireland so that would be a bit awkward unless the other person lived here so may just end up buying the tyres

Thoughts?

IMO ive run 18-19-20's

19's offer the best trade off for ride and size/style to me.

In 18's you get a little more choice for offorad tyres.

The goodyear duratrac are probably your best bet for all round grip but if you are wanting to deal with snow for a little bit of trade off in muddy/grassy grip then vreds are you target.

For recovery work though go for a cheap set of 18's, they give you more tyre wall and you dont need to worry about damaging the wheels as much either Smile

In 18 the closest duratrac size is 265/70/18 but in 19's its the proper 255-55-19 size.
Both sizes will fit within the FF wheel well without much if any rubbing at all for the 18" size. FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

I run atturo 33x12.5R20 they aren't quite that height actually and they fit well with a lift.
Very noisy on the road tho, very cheap

I can get General Grabber AT's for my 20" rims (they do a 255/50/20 now) at around £170 a corner in the UK (have not priced them over here yet) so that's the "if I win the lotto" option but what is the story about vibration? I read somewhere that the TD6 was not supposed to have 20's ? what harm could I be doing? I might just look for a set of factory 18's stick some decent tyres on them and then sell the 20's to get some of that money back

England 2014 Range Rover Autobiography SDV8 Loire Blue

I've run General Grabber AT2 275/65/18 on mine for a year now, not very noisy, grip well in anything you ask of them road wise and done a full year of off roading in all conditions and never had any bother, they are 32" tall and you need to heat up and bend the lump at the front of the O/S rear wheel arch where the fuel filler pipe is, it's not the pipe, just the arch liner...

You end up with a 7" sidewall so they are very comfy and you don't have problems with pinching the low sidewalls on bigger rims which I was doing regularly on 19"s with the standard size...

These GG's wear well and are much, much stronger than the Goodyears I did run and throw away a lot...!!!

The TD6 and 20" tyre issue was down to the engine vibration being felt more so when in Drive and the foot brake applied as the resonance from the idling engine is damped out a little by the tyre sidewalls but with smaller stiffer sidewalls this isn't the case. The active engine damping(!) cant get over this either but most dont find it much of a problem. FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Cheers if that's all then I would not be worried about it as I have been driving auto's for years and always slip into neutral at junctions if I need to stop. might just go with the big tyres if I can't find a set I like - did see a set of 19's earlier with tyres but when I rang up they had gone - a full set of as new dunlop tyres as well on them for £350

You'll get a lot more choice with 18" rims, I run General Grabber At's and I can't fault them, I've covered 25K on them and they are hardly showing any signs of wear. And on a purely financial note, I managed to pick up a couple of tyres at £110.10 ea. Thumbs Up Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!
