Done 90000 miles on original front and rear airbags - but just polling the good people here for the mileage that people experienced failure at for Front or Rear bags?

I am working my way through a list of preventative maintenance and just wondered how long my game of suspension roulette was going to last Howard

My front one developed a leak and exploded around 75000 miles. I know some people that have gone much longer. I don't think there is an average time for them, but I would certainly have it on the list of preventative measures around 100k if you were planning on doing any big trips that involved been away from the UK for extended periods - sods law states they will always go when you are as far away as possible from any dealer assistance/recovery firms etc. 2008 TDV8

Howard, I don't think mileage has much to do with it, when my front one went the bag looked fine and didn't seem to be that old, it was a Dunlop so defo the second bag at least, had about 130,000 miles then...

A pair of Delphi's and it was sorted, pretty sure the rears are original, they tend to last a lot longer from what I've read...  Pete

My front right went at about 145k, looked original. The front left had already been replaced. (Front left was a lot harder to remove the bolts too!)

Both of my fronts still original at 136,500k. Date sticker still attached, 04 and delphi.
As above don't think its related to age. You may find an improvement in ride if replaced.

Just sold MY02 with 131k and all original bags. Put the FFRR into lift mode every now and again and clean the cones and bags, amazing how much muck they can gather

@jambo27 I am planning to take family camping in France next year so they will be changed (like your descriptive word "exploded" makes up my mind for me with family in the car)

@Haylands - thanks Pete and also for comment concerning rear bags - I think my strategy for the rear bag would be to buy one as a spare for the trip

@v8rich - just shows mileage is no indicator when others fail in half that distance.

@gregdav - yes an improvement in ride can be had by younger replacement

@47p2 - I do the same - put in off road mode and clean underneath as I felt this the friction of dirt in there must wear out the bag

'02 4.4 here and one front airbag went at around 100k miles and 11 years old (it was original). It's about the same mileage that dampers need freshening up anyway so no real hardish. I replaced them with a pair of OEM delphis so if it lasts just as long then I would be happy. I also replaced the rear dampers (Bilstein) soon after although they would pass the MOT fine it seemed a bit nuts to have new dampers on the front with 100k+ miles dampers on the rear. I was surprised at the difference in stiffness between the old and new dampers on removing them, like chalk and cheese!

Just to add I think it's more common for the rear airbags to fail first, although as they are extremely easy to replace and don't necessarily need to be done in pairs (although for peace of mind it might make sense to) there is no need to be hasty in replacing them. If the rubber is starting to crack up/perish then it's time to consider it.

+1 for the above... Changing them will make quite some difference in the feel of the car

The rear bags very rarely go wrong but are very cheap compared to the fronts... I change all of mine when I did the front just because I could... Made it ride loads better too

As weejock said, biggest difference I noticed was when changing the rear shocks, with genuine ones... massive difference to the quality of the ride..

Probably have to do my bags again soon as it now weighs just less than an aircraft carrier...!!! Pete

@Weejock - thank you for your info. New rear Dampers on my list

@Cam-Tech-Craig - Thanks for the tip on rear Airbags being cheap - I can only find them for almost same price as fronts (which seems a bit crazy) - any pointers on supplier and make to go for (I guess Delphi?)

@Haylands - Thank you for your input - After the bumpers, STephen Hawking has calculated that your car now comes with its own gravitational field and can bend light.

@DSCOOPS - thank you for your input - by the way common consensus is to replace both sides at same time as you would do with shock absorbers. Howard
