She's not being unhelpful - the DVLA do not track services - so she has no information to give you.

Any main dealer will be able to track what main dealer services were done - but anything at independents will only be known to the garage concerned or the previous owner.

If it were me - I'd assume nothing has been done - and change all the fluids & filters Thumbs Up

If you car has had more than one previous owner, you can fill out a form from the DVLA and with a cheque for £5 you can get an envelope filled with photo copies off all the info the DVLA hold for it. So you'll get copies off all the old V5's any cherished plate transfers etc. Just say you're researching your cars history.

That'll give you a list of names and addresses of previous keepers for you to contact to see if they happen to have a bundle of receipts or the service book sitting in a drawer somewhere. - bear in mind the addresses might be out of date as they're not updated if the person has moved since selling the car.

Shuv it,

We bought a car from Stratstone. It had originally been supplied by Listers. Stratstone then bought the Listers garage. The Stratstone garage we were using said they couldn't access the service and maintenance records from that other garage which was formerly Listers. I contacted that garage and they didn't have all of the records, just a discreet screenshot of work carried out in Listers name, if that makes sense.

Sometimes there can be gaps between main dealers and their service records. As another example, Stratstone might be able to access all work their group has done on a car but might not have access to work done by another franchised group which they don't own. It can mean leg work by having to identify which garages have done work and then individually contacting them.

Thumbs Up

Thank you for advice!

I meant it unhelpful in trying to ascertain all previous owners ~ now that would be a task and a half! The named last owner to myself had a name made up of every letter of the alphabet and again!!! I did not realise DVLA could do that ~ she never said what Zirconblue helpfully stated ~ just advised me to trace myself!!

Thanks!

I asked the main dealer if they could give me a printout of the cars service history, but they refused on grounds of data protection. In spite of the fact the this dealer supplied the car originally, and have done every service since then. I have a fully stamped up service book, but I particularly wanted to see what warranty or other repair work had been carried out on the car. The only thing they would do was look at the service book and confirm that the entries were correct. I found this to be unhelpful and unnecessary. Surely they could have removed any personal details of the previous owner and still provided a printout? 2011 Vogue TDV8 4.4

Lots of firms are scared of breaching data protection. Mainly just down to ignorance of the rules, much like "health and safety" is thrown around about all sorts.

I don't think there's even any personal info in a service history. Just a list of dates, mileages and the dealership that did the work.

Yes, but it seems to be for cars built since 2013.

Otherwise it just refers you to the Dealer, where I expect I will get the same response as before 2011 Vogue TDV8 4.4

also, you could look around the car for stickers, or on the number plate, or even calling cards in glovebox etc. with indy garages, once a postcode of phone number is found, you are on to something at least. even the mot cert. might give you something.. old tax disc holder?.... tyre fitting invoice?

I used to read the bits of rolled up newspaper that some of my old cars were repaired with in the sills and wheelarches, wondering how far it had travelled etc. Rolling Eyes
