Cabin Noise TD6 v TDV8 4.4

I had a short overlap between buying my 2011 TDV8 and selling the 2006 TD6. With both cars available, I thought it would be interesting to do an experiment on cabin noise, so I downloaded a decibel meter for my Iphone 5, and set off for two successive runs over the same stretch of road. Subjectively, the TDV8 feels much quieter than the TD6, but by how much?

TD6 TDV8 4.4
30 mph 68 Db 64 Db
70 mph 78 Db 76 Db

So the TDV8 is definitely quieter, but the raw figures do not tell the whole story. Cabin noise in the TD6 is dominated by the drone of the engine. This is hardly surprising, as the TD6 is doing 2500 rpm at 70 mph, whereas the TDV8 is just on a fast tickover at 1400 rpm at the same speed. Incidentally, the TD6 when fitted with the default Goodyear Wrangler HP tyres used to make an annoying Wa Wa drone, especially when the tyres were part worn. I changed to Goodyear Efficient Grip tyres last time, and there was a significant drop in road noise.

The cabin noise in the TDV8 is mostly from the tyres, and engine noise is well muted. My car is fitted with the standard Pirelli Scorpion Zeros, and although they are quieter than the old Wranglers used to be on the TD6, they are nowhere near as quiet as the Goodyear Efficient Grip. As I hardly ever venture of road, I shall stick to the latter next time.

Incidentally, the air con fan does make a significant contribution to cabin noise in both cars. By selecting Off rather than Auto, the Db figures reduced by 2-3 Db. 2011 Vogue TDV8 4.4

Note that the dB scale is a logarithmic scale, in other words, the 2 points difference is actually quite a lot in real life even if it seems little seeing both numbers so close together. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

Interesting, thanks for taking your time to do that.

I still think my 3.6 TDV8 is fairly loud but maybe I did not drive a TD6 to compare. Plus this is my first diesel ever.

Thanks for posting. Are the later tdv8s double glazed, , or was it an option.
Just a thought.
Greg.

All later models (post 2010 I believe) came with acoustic glass on the front windows as standard.

The side windows are all laminated.

Only the windscreen on the td6.

Also you have the foam bits at the corner of the windscreen, bottom, out near the side vents that you can only see with the door open. That's supposed to stop quite a bit of wind noise I understand.

I think there is also more soundproofing.

Is the hi fi any good ? That's the million dollar question ? Not heard a later car.....

Is the hi fi any good ?

It terms of sound quality, I didn't notice any difference - they are both excellent. My 2011 has the standard vogue AV, not the uprated 1200 w system. There are quite a few AV improvements though. In addition to the 6 disc CD/MP3 player, there is an aux socket, you can plug in a USB stick containing MP3 tracks, and there is an iphone socket. The phone also connects via bluetooth as before, but now it automatically downloads your contact list for easier dialling. There is a DAB tuner, and digital TV.

Tyre roar is really quite intrusive on the new car though, depending on the surface. Has anyone else experienced this or is it just me? 2011 Vogue TDV8 4.4

Yes, especially with the more aggressive tyres now fitted. I notice the absence of sound-deadening material on the ends of the compartment in front of the windscreen which I suspect allows a fair amount of noise to be transmitted.

these look interesting - and a radical concept as the tyre contains a foam insert. They don't appear to be available in my size, which is 255 55 R19, and are summer only. Also, the Goodyear Efficient Grip tyres don't seem to available in this size either! So when the time comes I may have to look for something else 2011 Vogue TDV8 4.4

It dawned on me that my oversized spare does not sit on the floor of the well so the floor is free to resonate. That situation will be changed ASAP.
