Picked my 2012 4.4 Range Rover Vogue up on Saturday, it looks like a new car, not a mark on it, 30,000 miles on clock. I traded in my 2012 HSE Discovery 4 with 34,000 miles on the clock. Now the tricky bit, daren't tell the wife. When I test drove the Range Rover, I fell in love with it BUT on the drive back home from the dealer, using the Motorway, I'm finding the noise, I think road noise, is much higher than my discovery. It sounds like air con fannes running at there full speed. I have Pirelli Scorpion M+S on the car, I had Pirelli Scorpions on the Disco, not sure if they had M+S written on them though. I was hoping for a really quite ride moving up to the Range Rover.
Does everyone else have a nice quite Motorway cruising Range Rover?

Ours is quiet on the motorway and has the Pirelli tyres.

1. Are you cruising on the motorway when the noise is prominent (speed, gear, cruise control activated etc)?

2. Did you - re in car fans and air con - switch them all off so you can eliminate them as potential sources of noise?

3. Have let your wife drive it on the motorway without advance warning her or commenting on your noise paranoia, to see if she picks up on it?

4. What are the tyre pressures set at?

Mine has Scorpion Zero's (which all have the M&S logo i believe), no obvious tyre noise.

Are there any obvious rubber seals adrift/missing on the doors or windows?

Thanks for the replies, I have checked all fans where turned off, all windows and roof closed, the noise seems to be not too bad at 50 mph but 60 upwards it is quite intrusive. Tyre pressure as recommended 33psi front, 36psi rear. I must admit I changed the wheels on the Disco from 20" to 19" to make the ride softer. I wonder if 19" wheels would make any difference on a Range Rover it does not sound like a mechanical noise ie engine, gearbox, bearings etc. maybe I will get used to it.

Could it be wind noise ?

Some people have experienced problems with ill fitted windscreens and/or poor seals

Larger profile tyres will always offer a better ride at the expense of handling and vice versa on any car.

One thing that might be worth checking is, tyres with uneven wear, out of shape or buldges in the tread can make strange noises. So it might not be the tyres design but tyre damage. you'd only need one to make a noise.

Wind noise is another possibility though, which is why i'd suggest checking for any missing or damaged seals around windows or doors. Mine is certainly very peaceful inside.

I had a problem with what I thought was tyre noise. It wasn't. It was the plastic cowel at the base of the windscreen. It vibrated at speed and seems to be a known problem. I had the piece replaced and it became MUCH quieter. It was only a problem at about 50 mph +.
