TV Licence

Hello all,

I was sitting in the car today, had 10 minutes to kill waiting to pick up my daughter so watched a spot of Channel 5 telly.
I had a curious thought about whether or not I needed a TV Licence.
I know we all need a TVL at home, unless the TV is not able to be connected to a TV input.
So, I was just curious, does anyone know if there is a clause with regards to car TV's.
Like I say, just wondering out if curiosity.

As above, home TV licence covers you for portable TV receivers. It used to be so long as they were powered by their own battery and not plugged into the mains of an address that didn't have a licence, i don't know if that point still applies. But either way unless you're sitting outside your mates house with your car plugged into a C-tech while you watch the TV on his drive you should be ok. Laughing

I only know as I used to have a pocket TV about 20 years ago, and got told off by the boss for not having a TV licence. Laughing

Those pocket TV's were bloody terrible weren't they, with the screen the size of a postage stamp. With all the HD stuff around today it's easy to forget just how bad the signal was.

No because you can have more than one TV in your house.

Oh god yeah! i think it was a DSTN screen too, it it was more lines with vague shapes than an actual picture. Laughing And running it on 8 or so AA batteries it only lasted about 90 min or something!

All that said, they were just the best thing in the world, so futuristic. Couldn't watch it but they were cool.

So if I only watched TV at home via catch-up services and didn't have a licence, watching live in the car is illegal? Not that I do, but just hypothesising.

PS: I used to have a couple of those portable TVs. The first was a black and white Casio that projected a grainy image onto a mirror. Seem to remember it looked like this: https://www.etsy.com/listing/153272274/cas...al-display

from the tv license site,

You need to be covered by a TV Licence if you watch or record programmes as they're being shown on TV or live on an online TV service. This is the case whether you use a TV, computer, tablet, mobile phone, games console, digital box, DVD/VHS recorder or any other device.

i was a sinclair fan and had one of these,

and then one of these,

both were rubbish and both sold to taxi drivers.. ... - .- -.

Again from the TV licensing site;

Quote:
Having a TV Licence means you can watch or record live TV using any device you like, including:
TV sets
Laptops and desktop computers
Tablets, mobile phones, satnavs and other portable devices
Digital boxes (PVRs), satellite and cable, e.g. Freeview, Freesat, Sky, Virgin Media, BT Vision, YouView, Apple TV, Chromecast, Roku and Amazon Fire TV.
Games consoles
DVD, Blu-ray and VHS recorders
There are a few devices listed above that can be powered solely by their own internal batteries, and your home TV Licence will usually cover you to use these to watch live TV away from home. However, if you plug one of these devices into the mains and use it to watch live TV away from home, you need to be covered by a separate TV Licence at that address (unless you’re in a vehicle or vessel like a train, car or boat). This is a legal regulation governing TV Licensing.

So theoretically if you take a tablet to work, plug it into the mains and watch a live broadcast on it, it's illegal unless your work address has a TV license.

Seems a bit vague about the vehicle bit though. Does it mean you don't need a license on board vehicles, ships etc or does it just mean you're allowed to watch in a vehicle etc if you have a license for your home whether they're plugged into the mains or not?

i think you will find that if you have a home license then anything classed as a portable device , and i would include the tv in your FF, will be covered whether you plug in the mains or not..

any fixed or or classed as non portable device would have to have a license for that property.. ... - .- -.
