TPMS

Afternoon
I've managed to break the top of a tpms valve while trying to take the cap of it.
It needs replacing now.

A full set of 4 can be bought online for some £50. My question is how do I know which frequency mine work on and will the new set be compatible with the signal reader?
I know I don't need to replace all 4, but I wouldn't like the same to happen to any of the other 3 valves at a point of real need to get some air in!

I know it's probably easier to replace all the valves with standard rubber and have the monitoring system turned off but I'm at the point of getting ready to sell it and I don't want to give an impression to a prospective owner that the cars been looked after using cheaper options and when buying a car I like to know everything that's supposed to work on it works.

So...... How do I know which frequency to go for without taking the tyres off??

This may seem like a silly option, but why don't you just buy one sensor, from L/R to fit your car? I'm sure that Dan will do you a good price. Failing that phone your local stealer and ask the nice partsman for a replcement, note the part number, and say "I'm going to have to think about that one, Thanks". Enter the part number in to google, or your preferred search engine, and look at the description, one of them will tell you the frequency of the unit Thumbs Up Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

should be 433 or 315mhz depending on the market requirements according to the WM......

maybe someone has an old one and can let you know the frequency.. ... - .- -.

I think they are generally one of the two, but not sure how to determine which without removing the tyre.

I can replace just the one, but I know that a) they only last so long, and b) the other three look corroded enough to end up breaking sometime soon anyway.

I'll try the stealers on Monday and see what they say Crying or Very sad

have a look on your build sheet, it should tell you on that...i suspect it will be 433mhz [mine are ].... ... - .- -.

in the UK (and all of europe i expect) we use 433mhz for most vehicle remotes. It's the frequency band allotted to them.

in North America they use 315 for such things.

They are awful things Evil or Very Mad

Are the ones you're getting for £50 per set new ?

They corrode badly with age and have a tendency to snap - depending on where they snap, that can mean the wheel immediately deflates - so be very careful when & where you check your tyre pressures.

My advice is to remove them and replace with regular rubber valves - then disable the warning light with an IID tool. IMHO I'd rather live without TPMS than run the risk of a valve snapping off.

If you want to keep them, then consider replacing all 4 with new ones, because theres won't be far behind in corrosion terms.

I think I've still got my old ones in the garage if you just want a free replacement

I hugely appreciate your offer of your old set Alistair but as you say they do corrode.

If I was planning on keeping her for a while I would replace them for regular rubber valves, but as I'm approaching the point of updating her I'd like to give any new owner some peace of mind that these rotten things have just been replaced.

The price of £50 is for a new set. Then it'll be the cost of getting all for tyres refitted and balanced to replace them, and while I'm at I'm a sucker for a bit of 4 wheel alignment.

It's a curse being as fussy as I am but I do prefer to shell out for preventative rather than "Oh F@&k - what's wrong with it now".
