Incredible Performance from General Grabbers

Hi All,

Just a bit of a rolling ( Wink ) update on my General Grabbers as fitted to my L322 by AJS 4x4.

Fitted by them 1/11/12, at around 25000 miles.

Now showing 4-5mm tread left across the board, with one edge down to 3mm. I did swap front to back axles around 12 months ago.

Mileage now a remarkable 70000, so these tyres have done the best part of 45000 miles and are still above the legal limit, although a puncture today will see more ordering some new ones shortly.

They have suffered mainly road driving, with some light off road and occasional hard use on particularly vicious and sharp flint track - murder on the sidewalls…


I reckon I have lost maybe 1 or 2 mpg and had a slight increase on road noise, but overall I couldn't recommend these tyres highly enough!

Hard to tell as I haven't really seen any Whistle Wink

But the set that I had on my Shogun preformed very well. And I might add that they are very good on wet roads, no real noticeable difference between them and the scorpions that were on the car when I got it. I have done about 15k on my set and they are showing no signs of wear Thumbs Up Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Only limited exposure to these conditions but at no point in the last 3 years have I felt nervous about any weather that mother nature threw at us. In fact, I have been secretly hoping for bad weather every year just so I can drive in it!
Standing water, mud, snow, gravel, all tackled with equal aplomb.

Lucky Censored - as of today I've just put my 10th tyre onto the RR in the 18 months and 40k I've owned it Wink

The 4 Pirelli on it when I bought it were partly worn so got replaced shortly after, probably due to having fun with my right foot. Replaced them with a set of GG ATs when down at my parents in Wales, returned home to Surrey and then went laning up in the lakes. Burst one and wrote off a second one so two replacements (bad luck unfortunately).

Then after about 25k the front pair had started cracking on the sidewalls so replaced them. As my rears were now getting worn was thinking about replacing them soon. Then went laning around Surrey with (perhaps in hindsight stupidly) the same guys from the Lakes. Managed to put a puncture in the sidewall of one of the newish ones on the front.

Decided to try out some Goodyear Wranglers today so put another 4 on the vehicle and taken the two best GG ATs as spares. Tread pattern and depth looks better than the GGs but time will tell. Perhaps I should stop trying to outrun Defenders on bigger sidewalled tyres when off the beaten track but it's so much fun showing them up Whistle

The way I see it you've got 3 options

1 Drive with a lighter throttle setting, and we know what the answer to that will be Wink

2 Follow Pete's example and fit bigger tyres, I think he's on 275/65/18

3 Get rid of the TDV8 and get a TD6, cos I don't have that problem Laughing Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

1. Boring
2. Considered it but would need to fork out for a set of Compomotive wheels first because of the disc / caliper size on the TDV8.
3. If I had a Td6 I wouldn't have a problem with option 1 Razz

Option 4 - put a TDV8 in the Defender, on my bucket list. Ed

I found Grabber AT's way too noisy for road use. Got some nice smooth Pirelli's now - peace in the cabin is more important than longevity to me! 2005 L322 Vogue Gold gone

It's defo the low sidewall, I did three tyres in the lakes when I had the 19's, also did another two on the Moors... Had the GG A/T 2's on for about a year, gone from a 5 inch sidewall to a 7 1/2 inch and haven't damaged a tyre at all apart from the little cuts you always get when on rock....

Fronts show little wear in about 10,000 miles, rears were wearing on the outside edge so I changed the rear camber from -1deg to +1deg and that's now stopped, and as an aside the turn in on fast roads has greatly improved....

Don't really know what you can do apart from fit earlier brakes and drop to 18's, don't think your insurance Co would like that though.... Pete

How about cooper-zeon-ltz, they do a 255/55/19, and then they have 275/55/20, 275/60/20 and 275/65/20
Toyo do all the 20" sizes in Open Country A/T II, 275/65/20 in OPEN COUNTRY R/T and 55 and 65 in Open Country M/T
Falken tire do a wide range of sizes in the WildPeak A/T, up to 24" rims Shocked for all you off road gangsters Wink Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!
