Auto dimming door mirror glass - how to they work?

The drivers door glass on mine had been bodged before i bought it with one of those stick on glasses.

I decided to replace it with a proper auto dimming glass this week. The interior mirror and passenger side mirror still dim fine, but the drivers glass doesn't.

Does anyone know what feed is sent to the glass to make it dim? is it 12v or 5v? Rave tells me there is a feed that goes to it, but doesn't tell me what that feed is. Either i have broken wires in the mirror head or the electrochromatic element of the new glass is faulty. So i need to put a feed directly to the glass to see if it dims and check to see if a feed is getting to it from the car. So i know whether to send the glass back or not.

That's a tricky one bud, I know that the sensor that triggers the auto dim is in the rear view mirror, and you should have 2 pairs of wires going to your mirror glass, 1 pair for heating and the other for dimming. Can you not put a meter on the wires to see if you have any voltage there at all? Should be easy to determine which are the heating wires by turning the heated screens on.......... how you trigger the auto dim is anyones' guess, imagine that would involve darkness / inside with out lights, and torch to shine at the rear view and your head lights on Shocked Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Yeah The sensor seems to work ok as the interior and passenger side mirrors dim fine.

I think i'll have to pop both the door mirror glasses off and plug the drivers side into the passenger one and see what happens. I was hesitant to do it though, as there is always a chance the glass with crack when you pull it off. Mad

The only other way is to remove the mirrors and try them on the opposite sides of the car, at least you'd know if the fault was in the loom or the mirror Thumbs Up Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

yep definitely the glass, passenger side works on both sides, the (new) drivers side one doesn't work on either side.

Hopefully island 4x4 have one in stock and i can pop up and swap it on monday.

Shocked Good Luck, at least you know it's the glass and not the car, which must be a big shock Laughing Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

I was already thinking about how i would strip down the mirror head to repair the wires. It's annoying though, as the old glass fell to bits when i took it off. So hopefully Island have another one in stock and i can just swap it there and then.

Well tried a second "Eurospare" mirror from Island 4x4 that doesn't work either. I would assume they're not much cop! So will be taking both of them back and getting a genuine one.

@zircon, mine has the same mirrors and investigation put me towards ebay but i folded and got my mirror glass from my local MD at £100 ish quid. It at the time was a bit cheaper than the site sponsers could do it for but not by much. My MD also fitted for £10 with the breakage being their problem if it happened Very Happy All local garages would not touch it with a barge pole.

Yeah my local dealer quoted me just over the £100 mark with the discount. For the sake of £40 i thought it was worth going with the pattern one.

The non-dimming ones (from the Disco's) are only about £50 from the dealer, less than that for pattern ones. Really want to get the dimming thing working though, it's the only bit on my car that doesn't work!

They don't normally break during fitting, but when you try and take the things off, but i dare say the parts guy will lob it on there for me.

I would have been happy to fit one myself, quite capable of stripping and refitting an engine (subaru not FF) but like most don't want to throw £100 down the drain. Imo for the mirror it was worth the little extra for someone else to cover the cost Very Happy

No i get your point, wasn't suggesting you couldn't do it yourself. I might just ask the parts bloke to put it on for me. They're pretty helpful.

Sorry Zircon did not mean to come across any other way than helpful. I think all members could do it just sometimes it's worth a few quid not to have any stress and the part you have paid for is covered despite anybodies butter fingers Thumbs Up

Must say they were one of the first things to go on mine, mine were flat and left a massive blindspot you could lose a 7 1/2 ton lorry in...!!!!! I got some cheap as chips normal heated ones with a curve and the blind spot has totally gone, very easy to change and they still are fine 18mths later...

Original drivers one didn't dim but the passenger side did so stuck it on eBay and got two people fighting over it, went for £88 in the end...

Can't say I've had problems since with them not being self dimming, mind you I don't drive in the dark much these days... Pete
