Limp mode?

Guys.
Sorry for not searching properly, but limited 3G in Sherwood Forest. 2004 TD6. Neighbour borrowed and stuck 25l of diesel in as a thanks. 20 mins later while driving in traffic, when revs were low comming to a stop the car started juddering (like sh*t) in the fuel or drop of water. Knocked it into neutral and engine reved ok.
Was heading upto Sherwood so decided that 70mph would burn off any missing and is top up.

Driving as good as gold then M11 at 70mph and I lost all power. Foot to the floor and could only get 3k revs with the car slowing down. No warnings or bongs. Got it into McD's and turnt off for 15 mins. Restarts as good as gold but only revs to 2750-3k.
Still no messages or noises. Selects all gears ok and goes into manual and changes ok. Car does accelerate upto about 30-50 ok but feels like box slipping as when you hit 2k revs the car revs between 2k-3k freely without accelerating. Will not rev over 3k.
First family holiday for a while and had to bundle everyone in work van!! Sad

No noises. No smoke. No messages. Starts first time. Won't rev over 2750-3k in or outta gear.

Anyone any suggestions where to start?

Thanks so much guys.

Na was definately diesel. Wouldn't it just cough and splitter with crap diesel tho? It seems like something is limiting it to 2750-3000 revs

Ticks over good as gold. No smoke. If you floor it the revs shoot and sit at 2750-3000 but the car accelerates real slow (as if slipping) but I don't think it is slipping. Accept, some days your the pigeon, some days your the statue!

Definately seems like it's being limited electronically.

It did judder at around 1500 revs (only in traffic) but sat steady when revs hit Tickover.

Proberly a million miles from the truth but in my head:-

They stuck 25l of crap diesel in and the with the few times it stuttered, and maybe stuttered at 70mph but didn't feel it, the brain has thrown it into some sort of limp home mode?

As say that option proberly don't exsist but know my old P38 used to do similar.

Will definately drain the 1/4 tank out (somehow) and change filter. But would that cause the issue of some kind of limp mode? It's definately being limited electronically rather than fuel starvation. I.e would the fuel issue throw it into a limp mode? If so does it clear itself when running ok again as in left sitting Or does it have to go on PC to clear?

It revs from Tickover to 3k "now" very freely when driving or in Neutral So I'm guessing whatever the fuel missing has caused has happened! When driving it revs to 3k freely but accelerates as if I'm at 1k revs.

Sorry for all the questions but have limited access to internet at mo

The problem is all of this is guesswork until you can get it on a diagnostic. If the ECU is limiting it then this should say so, and why.

Of course, this is the reason you should have your own IIDC / Hawkeye etc, but maybe somone near you does?

Blocked fuel filter would result in limited revs without logging a fault or showing a message on the display.
Could well be nothing to do with recent fueling.

Yeah I suppose I'll have to invest in a Diagnostic machine. Until then I'll have to limp it to Beadles Main Dealer I suppose.

Will deffo throw another fuel filter on but I think there must be more to it as the gearbox isn't accelarating to 3k. Feels like it's slipping. If I hold the throttle at 3k the car very slowly speeds up until around 2k revs and then changes up a gear.
Looks like a fuel filter. Drain tank and limp to Beadles!

Cheers guys

So Saturday and the suns shining so time to look at the FF. Threw a cheap fuel filter on (theory is to change it again in a week) and still getting exact same symptoms.
So decide to drain the tank. Take the feed off the fuel filter and I get a 20sec "hose pipe". Hit the key again and I get a splutter with air and a dribble. Does this every time after.

Decided to drain the tank (no great fun!!) but eventually got it all out. 60l worth.
On inspection it looks like there's antifreeze in the fuel.

25l of fresh fuel and tried at the fuel input again. Still just spluttering and air. Also "injector fault" on dash.
Decided to try start it and it did. First time! Drives good as gold and no g/box issues. Warning gone as well.

Still convinced it was in some kind of rev limiting limp mode. But guessing antifreeze in the fuel didn't help!!

Thanks all for the tips and advise!

Cheers

What makes you say it has antifreeze in the fuel?

Definitely change the fuel filter again once you've had a few days running. Thumbs Up

Yeah seems it was fuel causing the issue. Was definately antifreeze as was bright blue droplets and I tasted it! Embarassed

Will get a decent filter and stick it on in few days as you say.

Put a tank full of derv in and all seems well! Kinda wished hadn't leant it him now as coulda took it to Nottingham for the week instead of the old van. Still live and learn
Cheers all
