Sorry - my reply from yesterday didn't seem to get through.

It's a genuine expedition rack which I got from Dan for a decent discount. I wouldn't have said it's faultless - it's well made but needs / needed some mods.

Basically to mount it you lift up all 6 flaps on the roof and insert an L-shaped block which has a hole in the middle. You then balance the rack on those 6 feet (the rack follows the curve of the roof with feet to sit on each of the blocks). You then have a 1"x3" (approx) plate with a hole drilled in the middle which you place on top of the feet and there's then an Allen bolt which goes through all of them into the roof channel.

The initial problem Dan and I had when we were fitting it was that I had to cut ~1" off the plates to go in the middle. Because of the angle of the foot on the rack and the cross-bar and the (very impressive so far) powder coating on the rack the plate wouldn't sit under the cross-bar. So unless you bend the foot (and subsequently crack the paint) the only option was to trim the plate to fit. Given the price of the rack you'd have thought they could have come up with a better design.

When I hit the road the noise was also very load. At about 50mph the wind started to resonate through the bars at the front, 60 was just about bearable and 70 was pretty much unbearable. As you might have noticed I've solved this cheaply with some cable ties and pipe cladding. Which now means that you do hear the wind noise but it's just a background humming at 70 (bit like having very aggressive tyres - well like BFGs on a Defender).

verydisco has a plastic moulding which wraps around the front - I haven't tried making something that covers all the front yet but might do.

In very high cross-winds like I had on Sunday night it does sometimes begin to resonate again.

The back of the rack also wraps around the tailgate so you can open it all the way up if you want as well as support items longer than that. The only other fault is they've put a bar straight across the middle of the sunroof - whilst it doesn't block it it means that you can't climb out the sunroof onto the rack (handy for shooting ) unless you have a narrow chest.

So on the construction side of things it's very well made - I've hit a barrier with it by accident at the tip and I took the paint off the tip's barrier and it hasn't even dented the paintwork on mine - just left a yellow streak.

So my opinion is that it could have been an exceptional rack if those faults had been rectified first, as it stands it's a good rack, just a little disappointing. Ed

Thanks Ed for such a detailed reply ,I had a Prospeed rack on my previous vehicle which was a D4 & the rack was silent.i think the noise would put me off tbh

I suspect that they may have designed it with the G4 in mind. If I remember correctly those racks had a floor and deflector up the front.

I think the main source of the noise is the noise going between the rack and the roof. If you introduce the deflector at the front and the floor like on the G4 then it eliminates the noise. Ed

Yes the Prospeed one I had was a mesh floor but it's the wraparound front that made it so quiet

Hmmm. Now wishing I hadn't thrown out that "windscreen" from the boat. Would have made a useful deflector. Might try mocking one up to see the difference.

To be honest with two people its the work of 10 minutes to remove it. When I headed up to the Highlands for my grandfathers 90th we simply removed it.

I have the RR expedition roof rack too and was interested in one but the pipe cladding idea looks good to me!
