255/55R20 Grabber ATs are listed on some Czech and Slovak tyre sales sites, can't find any other mention though.

For info - my 22" LR wheels came shod with Continental 275/40/22 CrossContact LX 108Y - Extra Load - Mud & Snow tyres as standard fit. Steve

M+S on the sidewall means nothing in itself - Grabber ATs are a fair bit more aggressive than anything they come with as standard.

Agree - proper winter tyres tend to have a fairly 'chunky' tread pattern - larger gaps in all directions etc and maybe a bit more tread depth? Certainly can't find any Grabber AT2 etc for 22" wheels so far , only keep coming up with the tyres I already have except for the Vredsteins which are still not winter tyres either  Steve

Proper winter tyres are different from the ones intended for off-road use - they have a rubber compound designed to work more effectively at lower temperatures, a tread pattern with lots of siping for traction on snow and ice etc.

The approved winter tyres in 22" are Continental CrossContact Winter:

There aren't any off-road tyres that I have found in that size. There are either 275/55/20 or 285/50/20 (Cooper Zeon LTZ).

The 275/55/20 is perhaps too tall (the change in circumference is 3.7% - the tyre sites recommend no more than a 2.5% difference). However, I guess it is only about enough to make the speedo accurate.

The 285/50/20 is pretty much bang-on in terms of size (+1.6%) but obviously is wider so might have rubbing issues (the tyre is very close to the damper strut on my car which has 275/45/21s).

This thread on the RRS forum suggests that the 285/50/20 does not rub on the latest L494 RRS (same chassis).

So I think that 20" wheels with 285/50/20 is probably the way to go.

None have a high enough speed rating but, for insurance purposes, I think this is a low risk (as long as you are not exceeding the speed)

'Proper' winter tyres look fairly similar but with lots of sipes cut into the tread - they are made of rubber with a higher silica content to keep them more flexible at lower temperatures, but you can't see that

Regular Conti 22's on the left, Winter Conti 22's on the right -



They are back to back - but the block pattern is almost identical - hence they both get the M+S designation as they are largely self clearing. The Winters have much better grip in cold temperatures and on ice though
