minor side effect of lithium ion batteries any short circuit and they can go up like a firework. Most have protection circuit the prevent them exploding.

The foil outer is designed to contain a thermal runaway event, but clearly isn't designed to withstand being stabbed with a knife. Avoid stabbing your phone battery after removing it from your phone and you'll be fine
