Police car

Was wondering do any police forces still use the FFRR? Not seen any on my travels around the UK

Not sure they could justify the price now a days could they? A D4 would do everything the Police would ask of a FF surely? And at less than half the cost!!!

Not seen any for a while. They mostly seem to have BMW cars round here, 1 series, couple of X1s, some x3s and I was followed by an x5 just now..... Whistle There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Met Special Escort Group and the royal protection teams still use them

You won't see them on motorway patrol any more though

The Police could have RR's again if Landrover offered the correct spec vehicle at the right price to individual regions or nationally.
ACPO Association of Chief Police Officers will have some form of procurement policy supported by the Home Office and initial cost, servicing and reliability will be part of the price point.
BMW obviously have met the ACPO/Home Office tender hence why we have X5's on the motorway.
Maybe Landrover don't want their prestige vehicle used by the Police on Motorways?
No excuse for not competing with BMW and offering the D4. You don't need the X5 for pursuits, there are other more suitable vehicles to call upon. The D4 could do everything the Classic, the P38 and the earlier L322 could do.
I'm rambling here I know but the classic, P38 and early L322 were used to pull large vehicles off the carriage way and restore traffic flow asap. Now the X5' s have to wait until a recovery truck arrives and moves everything which takes hours.

SO Banging Head Banging Head if the motorway is blocked by a non fatal RTC (road traffic collision) it's probably because we have no Police RR's or D4's to clear the carriageway and we are instead waiting for a fleet of recovery trucks because the X5 cannot do the job of a RR. No I am not an ex traffic officer.
Have I just had a rant about the unsuitability of the X5 ?

Yes, but the Hatos have D4s, and they are invariably at the scene of an accident pretty quickly coneing the motorway off. Surely they could clear stuff off with those....... Probably the risk assessment says NO!!! There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I expect a lot of police cars are leased rather than bought, like just about every other fleet does these days.

BMW's generally depreciate less, so are cheaper to lease as they can be sold on for a higher price after a few years. It's the reason so many reps have BMW's these days, as it's cheaper to lease a 3 series than a Mondeo! Although i'm not sure why anyone would want an ex-police car. Sure they're well maintained but most of them will have been run pretty much 24/7 and used and abused. Holes drilled all over the place inside and out, worn out seats, and many will have been thrashed. It's worse than buying that old Astra they use on topgear! Laughing A friend has an ex-Police defender and that's got the scars all over the inside, but then on a Defender it doesn't matter so much.

I think as said above, the Discovery just meets Police needs as well as a Range Rover would, and is almost always going to be cheaper. I would expect LR would do a police spec Range Rover if asked, but unless they had a substantial order for them, then making them on the production line 'without' all the nice bits in them, would actually mean they cost more, they'd effectively be buying Autobiography models it's just SVO would be removing stuff rather than fitting it.

Defenders are often long lived in fleets (well those with any sense), Kent Ambulance service had a K reg defender about 3 years ago, and i saw a couple of L reg Police defenders around the same time. They'll obviously be owned rather than leased, and lets face it you can keep them going as long as you want quite cheaply and the over all life cost of the vehicle is then very low.

Merseyside have a couple of normal defenders, saw one today, but also had some armoured ones like those in Northern Ireland. Not sure if they still have them.

I think PSNI phased or are phasing them out in favour of newer ones, so some of the old ones got sold off to other forces.
