Can anyone help me with a realistic idea of trade-in value for my Td6 please? I've used various sources from the likes of CAP and Glasses, but there's a wide variation in results - all of which are more than I'm being offered of course!

I appreciate that she's a bit long in the tooth and a JLR dealer will want to get it off the lot as quickly as possible, but I'm beginning to wonder whether I should try to find a prvate buyer instead. I don't mind taking a bit of a hit for the convenience of trade-in over private sale, but there are limits!

Car is an Oct 56 Vogue SE in Buckingham Blue, with two tone Blue/parchmnt Interior and Rear Seat Entertainment. All in pretty good nick with no damage, BUT wth 158k on the clock. Crucially the ecar also had a new gearbox just a couple of months ago and that's under warranty.

LR dealers don't need to do much to sell cars these days and I'm not expecting anything worth talking about off the screen price, but I don't want to see the price bumped up too much by a low trade-in ofer. What do you reckon this is worth???

This, by the way, is where I need Gazellio to tell me that he can find me the perfect car - a MY11/12 Rangie with ivory interior, good spec and under 30k+/- miles please! Currently looking at an AB model that seems to fit the bill.

Being a Td6 it will struggle.. I should know I own a late one same spec as yours. Obviously the miles are going to hit the price quite hard too. Trade in at a stab in the dark 7-8k?

I'd call a dealer and ask for a ball park figure for trade in - I'd be very surprised if they offer £7k with the mileage .....but I could be wrong. Private sale would be the best chance of getting decent money for it.

All you can do is shop around for a trade in value - i recently traded a 2007 TDV8 with 120k for £12.5k - good condition but the main dealer was putting it straight out to auction anyway

You can't focus on trade in price in isolation - I went for the best combination of sale price (not asking price), trade in value & finance APR - effectively the monthly cost to change

Thanks for your thoughts. I agree Alistair that it's all about overall cost to change, but I still can't help but wince when I'm being told they're offering £5k in the deal for mine! I've yet to go into full negotiation mode, but I'm hoping I can get them to sharpen their pencils a bit!

It's like any car, the dealer might not want it. In which case they'll offer you a small sum where they can't lose.

Parkers or Glasses will give you the max you're likely to get as the 'trade' price. The dealer will just work downwards from there.

It may be that your car is too high mileage for them to retail them selves, they don't have much trouble selling new Land-Rovers, so they have little incentive to take your part ex. Sometimes you get a better deal on the new car by not part exing your old one, then make more money selling your old one privately.

Your car at auction would struggle to make £5K so its simply a case of finding a dealer thats willing to A) take yours in & enter it in an auction knowing it will net him £3-£4500 & B) willing to lower the screen price to accommodate you sir

Members on here who are looking for similar cars to you are reporting NO deals & NO discounts from screen prices at the moment!

Shhhhhhhhh...don't tell them that Craig. My dealer could be on this site as I type - thereby totally blowing my negotiating strength! It's the part of the deal I enjoy best - you know, all that "I'll go and have a word with my sales manager and see what I can do" stuff!

More seriously, I was simply curious as to what the book value might be for the car, although, at the end of the day, I appreciate that the book value is pretty irrelevant and it's all about the individual deal and how keen they are to sell their car to me. As you suggest, LR dealers don't have to try very hard at all at the moment - which probably explains how so many of them get away with being so cr*p!

I completely understand your point and I'm sure they won't be disappointed if I take the trade-in out of the equation - sadly, it's not as if it's a significant part of the deal.
