United Kingdom 2012 Range Rover Autobiography 5.0 SC V8 Zermatt Silver

Just to close this off. Got the RR back after the tubocharger was replaced. Took four working days. It was the nearside one and took quite a bit of work. Apparantly the turbocharger had just disintegrated. All done under warranty - £2,300 so happy I took out that warranty Thumbs Up

Warranty up for renewal this month so the usual debate: Trade in for a newer model or get another year of warranty. Tough call as of course it's really driving well now. Rolling Eyes 2012 5.0L S/C

G'day Nomad,
How many miles had it done and was there any explanation for the turbo failure?
Thanks. ______________________________

91,300 miles. No reason given. It just chewed itself up. Once the warranty was agreed I must admit I didn't give it much more thought. Whistle 2012 5.0L S/C

Ok Ta. That's no many km. My 08 model has 240oookm or about 160ooo miles. There is the occasional turbo failure on here but it's not real clear why. Some suggest maybe EGR or split IC hose are possible causes. ______________________________

The first thing I did was check the IC hoses. No problem. There are no EGR faults or any other engine faults showing up on the IID tool so hopefully all ok there. They did clean out the intercooler when they changed the Turbocharger so might be something in that? 2012 5.0L S/C

Forums are full of undoubtedly well-meaning people being "experts" and giving the air of doom and gloom from the comfort of their armchair.....I know this from personal experience! I am sure to be shot down in flames here but as you asked, I will give you my 5p.

For me, TDV8s are a ticking timebomb, turbos going pop as the vehicle's approach 10 years and 100k seems to be an alarming trend. If one turbo has gone, how long until the next one goes? You are actually quite "lucky" that you are not looking at a ruined engine.

So if it were me, and you do a reasonable mileage I would sell it and go V8 petrol. Cheaper to buy, service and fuel (it just needs more of it!) A proper combustion engine with spark plugs, just as God intended! Yes, it consumes fuel at a healthy rate but the whole holistic package is a relative bargain compared with the potential catastrophic costs that come with TDV8 ownership.

Just my (limited) personal opinion - I am sure others will have another view! Smile

I wonder what the percentage rate would be of ;;
out of the thousands of tdv8 that have sold - that have ended with goosed engines due to turbo failure ,
compared to the much lower volume sold v8 petrol units that have ended up with engine failure Rolling Eyes 2007 tdv8 se ,stornaway grey
