Hitachi Compresso, Service Announcements + flat tyre

Not having the best of weeks, but over the weekend (after being keyed last week) my car decided to drop to it's bump stops 150 miles from home. It slowly lifted (took about 45 mins) before it faulted again, held the air and I was able to drive it home (gently).

It's been sat outside on it's bump stops after trying to self level and failing while I waited for a compressor piston seal and dryer kit for the hitachi compressor. Kit fitted and the compressor is still not great, although 1 in 3 times it will continue tryng to lift the car until I switch off the ignition, while 2 out of three times I get the fault code C1A20-64 Filling Slowly of whatever it says.

With my finger over the output of the compressor I can feel the air coming out and almost stop it butt not quite. My finger over the intake of the compressor creates a nice seal, , but there's not really much suction there if you see what I mean. The compressor still feels tired. Does anyone have any experience of reurbing these compressors or any advice on where to go next with it?

Also, while rooting around with the IIDTool, I noticed that one of the previous owners has thoughtfully disabled the service annoucenments (which I've been expecting for some time). I couldn't see any way of re-enabling it though. Anyone?

The flat tyre? well that's just p*ssed me off no end and with everything else has left me feeling like I should turn the spare wheel well into a fire pit. I'll get it sorted, but it would be nice to drive the car to the tyre place.

I tried the refurb on the older type compressor, didn't solve my problem, a new compressor did though....

Are you sure you haven't got a leak somewhere or a sensor problem? .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember Wink

prior to the car dropping to its bump stops it's been having compressor issues like being slow to raise and timeouts for several months. It's been holding air fine throughout all that time and I just hadn't got round to sorting it due to moving house and whatnot. Diagnostics have not shown any other faults other than those you'd expect from a failing compressor, and despite the refurb the compressor still feels really tired. That's not to say there isn't a leak as well, but if there is a leak, having air in the system will make it easier to find.

I think you're right and a new compressor will cure it, but it would be nice to know what went wrong with the old one. It doesn't appear to be the piston seal, the dryer, or the filters.

If anyone knows how to re-enable the service interval annoucements that would be great!

You should ask Meerbusch if he can help, he installed his refurb kit on mine 2 years ago, still working as good as new.

Changing the piston ring can make things better, but what condition is the cylinder bore in? If that is scored then a new ring can make it better, but not cure it.

I'd be wanting to use the diagnostic to bring it up corner by corner and see if that reveals any issues, before then checking the air tank and connections.

I'm more used to the D2 set up though which only runs the rear suspension and has no reservoir.

I tried raising a corner at a time, and it doesn't seem like the compressor has enough puff to do it. The cylinder bore looked ok and I didn't see any signs of scoring although when putting the new piston seal and checking for snugness, it didn't feel quite as snug as I might have expected.

I can't help think that it's just worn out beyond repair, and that I might have to replace it with the AMK one which if I understand correctly will work better, faster, quieter (almost a daft punk song Smile ).

I'm almost ready to order the new compressor from Dan@Duckworths but want to know whether I'll be able to do the software update with the IID Tool, or whether it'll lift the car sufficiently to get it to the stealers so they can do the update.

I haven't burnt the car yet, but it's been tempting. RR Ownership. The highs are fantastic but the lows are so low Sad

So having given up on the reconditioned (HITACHI) compressor, I've bought a new (AMK) one from Dan which arrived this morning (thank you) and now it's fitted it all seems good apart from an U0000 - Unknown Fault in the RLM Suspension ECU. Am I right to assume that this is just because I haven't updated the RLM ECU yet?

also check the air lines etc for leaks as a small persistent leak can over work the compressor. Aswell once pumped up it should maintain height for a while.

The new AMK compressor seems to have fixed everything, and the IIDTool has reflashed the Suspension ECU and the fault has disappeared. Happy Days! The car feels transformed and even SWMBO agrees (unusually). Now I just need to service the beast...
