Brake Fluid Change

Gents (&Ladies...)

Has anyone yet changed brake fluid on an FF? I only ask as I doubt very much when I change it that 1litre will do for a flush, but is 5litres too much?

Also how do I go about purging the ABS block as I bet that holds a decent amount of the fluid as well?!? FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

When replacing all my brake pipes from ABS to wheels, I only used @ 1.5 litres to refill and bleed (quite extensively!) IIRC.

Probably the only way to exchange all the fluid in the ABS is to do a change, get the ABS to kick in, do a change, get the ABS to kick, and so on, unless simply doing a full bleed clears all the channels in the ABS unit. Only other way I can think of is to remove it and hold upside down whilst shaking Embarassed

I am sure LR don't worry about this when doing it on a service though, although they do have the facility with testbook to jiggle the ABS. .

Ahhh so if i nose about in the Faultmate MSV i could probably force the ABS pump to activate and kick in... that might be worth looking into tomorrow then and get it flushed out.. I need to check the parking sensors as well so could get this done easily enough. May just get 2litres then as 5 seems a bit excessive then lol FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

I'm about to have the brake fluid changed on my L322. I was going to buy Castrol React high performance dot 4, but the service manual says to use Shell dot 4 ESL - this is twice the price and I suspect not as good either. As much as I dislike disobeying the factory recommendation, is there a special reason to use the Shell stuff (like the specific fluid in ACE system pumps) or will the Castrol be fine? NW060

Or DOT 5.1, it's a higher specification - higher temperature resistance. - Usually more expensive, but sometimes you find deals where it's cheaper.

I have *EDIT*LIES, apparently it's not 5.1!!**- ATE Superblue fluid ready to swap mine when I get round to it.

I used it in all my BMs and it was handy with the blue dye so you could see easily when it was through.

Hmm, that sounded intriguing.

I went and googled it, it appears unfortunately that it is no longer available. Lots of listings for ATE non-coloured fluid on ebay, all say "ATE TYPE 200 Brake Fluid not Super Blue - Unfortunately due to EU & US law brake fluid can no longer be supplied in blue. This ATE Type 200 is the same spec as the "Super Blue" but amber in colour to meet the new rules."

Is the Eu so far up its backside now that it has got to the point of regulating what colour brake fluid ought to be? NW060

I suppose it depends on what they put in it to make it blue. If it's some ultra toxic chemical, it's more likely the chemical has been banned generally, rather than the brake fluid specifically.

I mean brake linings once contained Asbestos, that's pretty much banned. Asbestos brake linings aren't banned, just Asbestos it's self.

Gosh you're right. it's gone.

They banned it in the US as "brake fluid must be clear or amber in color"

Apparently the EU followed suit.

Most of the vitriol I've seen against the ban was from home users using pressure bleeders and alternating to ensure a full switch over.

What's unclear is if me using the last 2 litre cans I have will lead to an MOT fail!

Thumbs Up

Couldn't you just add black food colouring into the tank before a flush to show when it changes? FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Yes I guess that would work, as any reduction in boiling point would only affect the old defunct fluid.

Cheers Will. Thumbs Up

Simple man = Simple solutions.

The best bit is as long as it's after based it will just boil off of it came to the worst but the fluid should nearly soak it up anyway as it gets pushed out and the new fluid would do the same to any remnants of it too 👍😄 FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

I've always found that the old fluid goes dark anyway so it's easy to tell when the new stuff comes through.... Pete

Shouldn't do, there's no brake fluid check on the MOT other than for leaks. If the tester notices the level is low he or she might give you an advisory.
