What does 4 owners within 5 years tell you?

In the search for a replacement L322, I see some cars with quite low miles, not too old and in seemingly good condition but find myself put off by many things including the fact that our outgoing model, cosmetically at least, was truly immaculate and in far better condition than many of those with less than half the mileage and newer, from 2010MY onwards.

And I'm cautious about those with a few owners in as many years.

1. Does more owners in a short time period devalue the car?

2. Or does it just suggest that people who own these cars in the first few years have sufficient means to just keep them for a year and then upgrade (e.g a 2010 car with 4 registered keepers already)?

Thanks

Thumbs Up

Not necessarily a bad thing but I would look into exactly who the owners were. It could have been a factory car or a dealer demo which would take care of the 1st 6 months of its life.

So then 3 owners to figure through. Perhaps they were the sort (like me) who were not willing to own it beyond the warranty. Perhaps not.

Do your research on the owners and also check the history of the car for warranty claims and service history. All dealers can do this for you and it will tell you loads. I did exactly this with the current one, an ex-factory car which hasn't had a warranty claim since 16k miles, has a proper service history and so on. Turned out to be a stoater. Thumbs Up

If you're buying, yes it devalues the car, it's a negotiating point.

If you're selling then no it doesn't. Laughing

Seriously though, some people keep a car for a couple of years then sell it on and buy a newer one. Of course it could have been a complete dog and people kept selling it as they were tired of keep paying out for repairs, on the flip side, it might mean you get a car that's had all the major work done by someone else.

My Jaguar which i traded in for the Range Rover, had 7 owners in 8 years, now it's on it's 8th. I only kept it for about 16 months, there was nothing wrong with it, it was a very sensible economical well sorted car with a high spec. And still pretty much immaculate when i sold it. I was sorry to see it go, but i wanted an L322 and couldn't justify keeping 3 cars! The first owner was Jaguar's Company car fleet, so a lot of owners might not mean anything at all, just that the owners moved on to better things.

With a Range Rover, i expect some people will buy one then realise they can't afford to run it so sell it on.

im so impressed with my 7 yr old L322 that ive had for only 4 months that im already thinking about getting a newer one, I got a cheapish one as I was worried that I wouldn't get on with it , with the intention of upgrading to a more expensive one. My current car is faultless and who ever will get it will get a great and reliable motor ,

Im the scenario that will add an owner for a good reason .

Likely scenario...

1st owner was likely the dealership, pre reg, if you will

2nd owner keeps his car for a year, before moving into another pre reg car

3rd owner keeps it till the warranty runs out

4th owner buys it from the dealer with 12 months warranty, warranty runs out, and so sells up/trades in

Unless we are discussing a 5.0 SC, then its likely they were all horrified with the fuel economy, and kept it for 12 months each Laughing

How many of us have had a car for 1 year...loads of us for different reasons so it not that uncommon mathematically for there to be 4 such owners especially if the garage has had it registered!

It means nothing at all, far too much is read into it! I have just replaced our family car (not the FF)........

31/10/2013 - Pre registered new by dealer (hence being registered on the last day of the month = sales desperation!)
01/12/2013 - Owner 2 buys the car with 4 miles on the clock. Within 6 months, owner 2 dies, does not leave a will and car is sold by executor to WBAC.
17/12/2014 - Owner 3 (me!) buys car from WBAC on a trade basis.

Basically, I bought the car via a fleet / trade contact because it was cheap (the week before Xmas!) and way below trade value with just over 4k miles and 4 years of OEM warranty remaining, WBAC just wanted it off the inventory. As there is money still in the car (i.e. the retail value is north of what I paid), I am thinking about selling it on. It's on Pistonheads at the moment, if it sells, it sells...........

So that will be 4 owners in 18 months. Is there anything wrong with it? Nope! And if there was it would be off to the dealer to be fixed under warranty. Thumbs Up 2006 4.2 SC

Something else to consider is if a car is passed to a different member of the same family it adds another owner to the list.

So if a car is in a Husband's name and is then kept by his widow who then gives it to their son, it adds two more owners, even though the car hasn't really changed hands and still be parked in the same garage.

My car was owned from new by the proprietor of a small business, the car was registered to the business. He had a heart attack in 2007 and wound the business up. He kept the car, so mine is really 1 owner before me, but the docs say 2......

Don't see it being a real problem to be honest.

My 1st rrs which I bought at 5 years old had 4 previous owners, which I kept for 14 months and traded in to a LR main dealer for another RRS. Had no problems whatsoever with the car. Thumbs Up

My 2nd rrs which I bought at 1.5 years old had 2 previous owners and again I had no problems with it, which i traded in for the L405. Thumbs Up

Although I do remember seeing a 1.5 year old RRS with 3 previous owners, which is a lot for a car which had only done 9k miles! Shocked

The main thing to look out for is condition & full service history, if it has been well maintained then there shouldn't be any real problem. 2014 SDV8 Autobiography Cool

I bought mine in Feburary and I am the 6th owner and it's a 2010 car that had only done 33k miles. Wasn't a massive concern to me and it was good condition and everything checked out ok so I went for it.

Done 7k miles since then with no issues.

I generally keep cars a longtime but I have friends that change every 6 months so it only takes a couple of those type of owners and it skews the total owners 2009(10MY) 3.6 TDV8 Vogue

That's what i've always done, and i've only ever slipped up once, buying a complete dog of a Volvo 740 TD via ebay. - it was only £500 though.

Maybe owned by a company and moved between directors or staff, it is after all the number of keepers not the Number of owners which is listed on the v5. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
