Is this possible to do under the new system?

Don't buy 6 months buy 12 and then apply for a refund.

6 months includes a non refundable 5% premium, so that would be £12.63 on most FFs. Don't let them get away with a penny that you don't need to!  2006 4.2 SC

That was my thinking Skot but wasn't sure if the system worked like that. Ideally I'd just want to tax one of my cars for a month at a time so they get some use in the dry times and not during winter, I have 7 at the moment so taxing them all for a year is not an option I will take as that's ££££ wasted on cars that could go a few months without moving off the drive! FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

You may be better taxing them for a 6 month period to cover the warmer months and only paying one admin charge per car.

Out of your seven, there's bound to be one or two you'll need to use full time. On that basis, you can then insure the untaxed cars for fire and theft only and make further savings that way.

Unless I am missing something here (which is entirely possible!) I cannot think why anyone would tax their vehicle for 6 months. The 5% premium is immediately lost and non-refundable. I know it's "only" 5% but it's over £25 on a typical FF over a year. I do appreciate that you need to pay out a big wad upfront but I just begrudge paying a penny more than I need to, especially when it comes to road tax!

I spoke to DVLA last week and there are a few things that work for me on the new system:

- To SORN you can go online and do this on the last day of the month. You have up until midnight and will receive a cheque for the balance in the post. If you only took 6 months tax and paid the 5% premium then this is lost.
- To re-tax a SORN vehicle, you simply go online and providing it is insured, it is taxed and ready to drive immediately. So just say you wake up to a sunny day and decide you want a certain vehicle, you can just tax it on the spot and drive away! The sooner you do this in the month the more you get for your money!  2006 4.2 SC

Insurance is no problem as all the vehicles are fully comp on a collectors policy so no issue with that and all are MOT'd as the station is literally yards away I drive them there for the test and straight back.

I'll give the monthly dd a whirl in two weeks on a car or two and see how it goes as yes it spreads the cost as well but as some sit unused I don't want to pay for those months.

I'd actually quite happily pay £10/week if I could do it for a week at a time as one is a new off-road toy so only gets out for those events and is in the process of being kitted up 😄 FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's
