When i was going through an X5 phase, I test drove a 3.0d and it had automatic headlights on. It was on the switch, and involved rotating said switch anti-clockwise to position "A".

nah, mine just puts the headlights on irrespective of daylight. Not to worry

At least it's not the other way round! (ie. OFF all the time regardless of light level) |

Sensor is normally on the back of the rearview mirror |

So they should come on at night without switching them on then?

Auto headlights are a Vogue spec fitment as standard but not till later model years. Think 2004.
