I suspect LR do a police version, which will come with certain features as standard that are options on retail models. Forces probably don't order the cars as custom built, they just order a police model in the colour of their choice. They probably also come with other things enabled like, putting the blues and twos on when they beep the horn, extra wiring for radio equipment etc. Some of the Rover cars used to have a "Police Mode" option in the ECU, some folk were activating it thinking it was some secret remap to make the car faster, all it did was allow the ECU to control other functions like the blues and twos. I think ACPO do all the testing and arrange for the specification with manufacturers. Vauxhall used to sell fully kitted up police cars, all a force had to do when taking delivery was put the county crest sticker on the side and add the number on the roof or where ever i expect LR do the same.

Different branches can spec their vehicles to meet current and potential operational needs. There will always be slight variations. Travelling around in circles again. |

But is anyone really going to bother saying "can you delete the roof rails" especially if doing that puts the price up. |

A good pal of mine was DP at a main Jag dealer until last year. They had a Police XF in with a blown engine which needed replacing and they were under strict instructions from the factory to only remove the engine and not to plug in the diagnostics or even read the fault codes. Now, given that, and the fact they wear out rear brake pads before the front ones (the traction control uses the rear brakes on the XF) do you still believe they aren't breathed on a wee bit? I certainly don't. |

Well that's Jaguar, my comment was regarding Rover Cars. Activating Police mode on a Rover car does sweet fa unless you have a light bar and sirens.

Most SO14 Range Rovers are armored, apart from a few tons extra weight they won't have any modifications to power....

Although I haven't found a decent source to back me up I thought that all "normal" police forces came under the home office, including the Met and the Security Service, with SIS being under the FCO. There are other special forces such as the Civil Nuclear Police Authority who don't come under the Home Office. I'm guessing they come under the environment or energy departments. Ed |

I was talking about cars, all Met vehicles have to be approved by the Home Office, all provincial forces get approval from their own authorities.... Pete

As I understood it, the OP is talking about the channels to which the roof bars are fitted not the roof bars themselves. John

I always thought that the roof bars of any type were out on so that in an emergency the officers /SAS can grab onto the car as it speeds away for close protection. This would make more sense if side steps were fitted too Discovery 4 HSE

That's Clint Eastwood protecting the President. When I did it, many years ago now, there were no roof bars or side steps. Though, come to think of it, at the time running boards weren't all that long past. John
