DVLA just fined me!

Well I had let the VED (Road Tax - whatever you want to call it) run out because not having a Disc i was relying on getting a reminder. Well I didn't get a reminder, they pointed out that they are under no obligation to send them out, so I just got stung with a £40 fine Banging Head Geoff

They've always sent reminders AFAIK. Bad luck. Maybe that is another reason for signing up the direct debit Graham

Actually they may have sent a reminder but the swivel eyed, window licking, retard who delivers our post may just have put it through the wrong letter box. No offence intended Shocked Geoff

must be the same postman who 'tried' to deliver your lights today...

suffering with back at the moment so it takes me a while to get out of my seat to answer the door and by that time he had scampered and put the usual 'cant deliver ,collect at office' card through the letterbox.. Rolling Eyes ... - .- -.

That's crap. I thought for a fine to be imposed one had to have been found guilty of an offence. Last time I checked DVLA were not either Judges or Juries, just a bunch of swivel eyed, window licking retards in a Govt department.

Out of interest, how does the direct debit thing work please?

I think you just pay monthly by DD - so they'll just keep taking the money until you tell them to stop. Geoff

Just set up a DD for my SC. Really easy and quick to do via DVLA's website.

It may cost a trifle more but better than over £500 going out in one hit. Si. <This is my name.

FWIW I am guilty of an offence, no tax and no SORN for March, that's an offence. It doesn't matter how it comes about, I just paid up and made a note in my diary of all the dates the cars I Tax (4) come up for renewal. Obviously I'll plead mitigation but I feel I'll be wasting my time. Geoff

After 93 years, motorists won’t have to display a paper tax disc.

As the registered keepers of nearly three million cars, vans and trucks, the vehicle rental and leasing sector has to process and distribute hundreds of thousands of paper discs each year. The association estimates that the removal of the paper tax disc will save its members millions of pounds a year in administration costs. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency estimates that tax disc abolition will save it around £7m per year.

The problem that's getting motorists riled centres around the refund you get on outstanding road tax when you sell your car. When ownership of a vehicle is transferred the previous owner gets a refund on any outstanding road tax but that refund is calculated from the beginning of the next month. The new owner, on the other hand, has to tax the car anew and their bill is calculated from the beginning of the current month.

What this means is that the Government effectively collects two lots of tax on the car for the month where ownership is transferred, one from the new owner who pays for that month and one from the previous owner who doesn’t get the tax for that month included in their refund. It's sneaky stuff and should give a useful boost to the exchequer, but at the expense of motorists.

So I guess if you lease you will see costs come down, just waiting for the cost of our Tax Disc to come down due to their administration saving and double accounting. Sounds like the CEO of Tesco was giving them them advice.

Maybe one of those online petitions is in order. I imagine it could be quite popular with motorists. Whistle
