I've had the 5.0 S/C for nearly 1 year now and I have just had a letter from the Indy (where I purchased the car) reminding me about an MOT and Service. I've already booked it in for the MOT.

Question is, should I wait for the Service Indicator on the car to tell me when the next service is due or should I book it in for a service after 12 months?

Any advice, mucho appreciated!

I'd go with what the car is telling you.

That's a classic sales pitch as far as I am concerned, send out letters and see who can't think for themselves and waltzes in ready to hand over cash they needn't have done yet. The garage would love to have your money in their account though I'm sure.

In your service book it clearly states "Refer to your service interval indicator"

If your local garage rang you up each time they thought you needed to fill up with fuel, would you? (Daft notion but you get my drift)

In this case, I will not be returning to the non-franchised Dealer who sold me the car (and sent me the letter) as I want to maintain the full Land Rover Service History.

Comes down to how much do you trust the intelligence of the car to tell you it needs servicing......

It clearly states in your service book the car needs servicing every 12 months or if doing high miles the car will tell you when you have achieved the milage required between services...

If you do like i do around 4000 miles a year then it would take roughly 4 years to reach the milage on the dash milage reader! Exactly why it clearly states in your service book to service it ANNUALLY

And, if you want to keep up your "full MD history" and any kind of warranty then you need the car servicing as per the schedule sir!

This is interesting to me, mine always says "Service Required" even when I got it, after it had just been serviced by a main dealer. Is there a known problem - IDTool can't sort it but it will be due a 12 month service in July. I guess I'll just have to wait. Geoff

I have had mine for 16 months and about 18K miles, was serviced by the dealer when sold in Jan 14, I had it fully serviced with the MOT in Dec 14 after about 12.5K miles but have never seen any indication anywhere telling me to service now or soon unlike my old BMW that counts down based on time,mileage and depends on driving style. There is a difference between knowing your sh!t and knowing you're sh!t

Rej, yours should be reset at time of service so you should not see it come on if you do under the maximum allowed miles between services sir... Should only pop up when you do big miles sir...

I disagree with the 12 months servicing. Below is a scan of my service booklet. You can see that only the Defender and RR Armoured in this table says "...Or 12 months after the previous service"

All of the modern cars have a Service Level Indicator for a reason, whereas the other cars have a Service Interval Plan. The modern cars 'ask' for a service based on algorithms from all the data they collect about the car and engine such as:

Distance travelled
How it has been driven
How often it is used
Engine stats constantly monitored (temps, pressures, load etc)

OK, so if I was doing 1,000 miles a year it might never need a service and common sense comes into play, but for a car that is regularly used, no matter how many miles it is doing, the car will dictate when a service is required and Land Rover can't void your warranty if you had it serviced as per THEIR guidelines!

Naturally if you ring any garage or Dealer and ask them what they think they are BOUND to tell you "Yes Sir, absolutely we must service it at 12 months" - Because they want your money, first and foremost. It's business!

If you read the paragraph below "Services" it relates to vehicles with a Service Interval Plan NOT a Service Level Indicator.

Now go and look at your mums 06/07 RRS service book Adam which will tell you to check at least the D3/4 & RRS if not the whole range at 12month periods... You see JLR have changed their tune on this several times! There are many different ages of service book with different information in them so! If your happy advising the good members on this forum to WAIT until there car tells them (even with the reports of service interval indicators being switched off from factory) then I'm NOT sir...

And I'm very sorry you hold such a dim view of Garage's/Garage owners Adam that were all out to "rip you off"
We advise all our customers to have a 12month service as much for their safety as anything else! Many owners wouldn't know one end of a spanner to another, have no interest in checking oil or water levels even if they could! And if following the advice as to wait for the Service Interval Indicator to appear we may not see them for 3 or 4 years when the car runs out of oil/water and destroys itself! And a £5-£10k bill! Where's the sense in that?

You just cannot beat regular & preventative maintenance... SIMPLES!!!

I recently had my SC done at the 12 month period rather than wait for the interval indicator to alert me.

To be fair, I did the same last year as well.

The mileage on mine has been running above average for the past 12 months and I had a fuel sender issue that needed dealt with anyway. It just made sense to get the thing serviced and given a good going over rather than wait. I didn't see any value to either me or the car in prolonging the inevitable. Si. <This is my name.

My car is nearly 5 years old and to date has had an annual service (this will be the 5th one). Current mileage is low for the years (43800). It's now booked into a Main Stealer for next month using a discounted service plan. Much rather do this than rely upon the car telling me when it is due.

For the 2010 model year, Land Rover changed from 7,500 to 15,000 miles for its basic service interval. They now recommend service annually, or every 15,000 miles, whichever comes first. High performance synthetic oil is now required.

Here are the other highlights of the newest service schedule:

Thanks to a larger element, the change interval on the air filter has been increased to 60-75,000 miles.
The cabin pollen filter is called out for change annually
Brake fluid is now changed every three years
Coolant is supposedly good for ten years
Spark plugs are rated to last 105,000 miles
The fan belts are rated to last 105,000 miles
Automatic transmission fluid and regular differential fluids are rated to last 10 years
Transfer case, locking differential, and dynamic response fluids are rated to last 75,000 miles
The fuel filter is rated for ten years
