2002 Brake Shoes mod

I thought I'd share this fix to repair the rear brake shoe retainers.
The brake retaining pins on the rear brake shoes in time will pull through the back plate of the brakes, I've had this twice now and when they fall out they make a sound that sounds like the wheel bearings have failed.

I've modified mine by using retaining pins that push in from behind the plate and retain inside the brake assembly, the parts I used were from a Ford Cortina, the new pins are slightly to long but I packed them out from behind the brake back plate with an M8 nut.

The old (broken) and new retaining pins.

The new pin in place retained on the inside of the brake disc.

The original pin type.

I think I might have to do mine, heard a noise when I reversed into the garage the other day.

Do you know what length the Cortina pins are and where did you get them please?

They're approx 25mm long, if you went to your local motor factors they may have them from another make of car the correct length.
I used Cortina ones as I remember how the fixings worked, I got these off ebay they were listed as Mk1 Cortina.

Just spent a couple of hours on my handbrake, one pin had fell off and was caught between the disc and backplate which was the source of the noise. I managed to shape a washer for the rear of the backplate and refitted the pin so all is well for another while

Excellent idea, I just bought two new backplates for mine as, although the pins are still holding, they have massive rust holes in them letting in all sorts of crap to mess up the shoes...

They are about £40 each + VAT for your info.... Pete

Decided to do this mod slightly different to Richcl

I kept and used my original pins/springs and just put a brake shoe hold down washer at the back of the backplate

These are available on the bay of fleas for less than a couple of your hard earned pounds

These washers come in two different varieties, Lockheed or Girling and I haven't a clue what the difference is, but I bought the Lockheed ones and they fit perfectly
