As mentioned, the previous owner of our rrv told me that the fuel gauge was dicky. His daughter ran out of diesel, when it was still showing half a tank. The AA came out and said there was no diesel in it

Its easier to do proper calculations when you fill it to the brim.

As it's showing quarter full now, I may just pop down in the morning and fill it and see how much I get in. In theory, being a 22 gallon tank, I should be able to get 15-16 gallons in, meaning there's still 5-6 left, which will give me a good idea of how accurate the gauge is. If I manage to get 22 gallons in, there's deffo something wrong!
It probably is right- if the sender is stuck at quarter of a tank, it will always show "152 miles" left, even when it's about to run out. |

Right then- I've just been and filled it up. It was showing quarter full with 167 miles range (it was 152 yesterday!)

Noddy, i've got a 2004 4.4 petrol. no matter how hard i try i can never get the gauge to read full. It always stops halfway between 3/4 and full. When i drive it the top half of the tank seems to disappear in no time at all and I am usually sceptical about the indicated range but it always seems to work out almost right. What I have noticed is that when the gauge hits 0 there is always at least 80 miles range showing and it seems to be accurate. I have never had the bottle to go more than halfway between 0 and the end stop but there does seem to be an awful lot of needle travel below 0. Maybe they put the backing legend on in the wrong place and thats the problem. |

Hmmmm... strange. I think the only way to really test these cars is to carry a gallon of diesel and run it till it stops, although I don't fancy doing that! |

The electrical fuel pump is located inside the fuel tank in the left hand side of the tank.

Thing is, it does read up to a point. It's showing just under 3/4 full at the moment with a full tank and won't drop until it's actually got 3/4 of a tank left, if that makes sense

I always thought it was never a good idea to deliberately run out of diesel? I can't quite remember the reasons why. Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

I think it leads to air locks in the fuel system and you have to have the whole thing primed again. =expensive. |
