You're quite right, Trommel - I had an E60 M5 nearly ten years ago (where did that time go...). Idling, particularly cold, the motor sounded really uninspiring and unsporting...but, wound-out, nothing like it for near-mortal expenditure.

Agreed, although I found myself, a propos of nothing in particular, looking at a Diesel S the other day in a mid-blue colour, no privacy glass (I know, I thought there was a law against that, too...) and sensible wheels...and I could see the attraction, albeit a different proposition to the Range Rover proper. |
