hi, new member and soon to be ff owner.

I am in the market for a ffrr, however, which do I choose? Lpg or diesel? I do approximately 10k per year, mainly a roads and motorway for work.

LPG EVERY TIME, ALL THE TIME. Who wants to drive a stinking diesel when you can have a clean V8 petrol.

Buy one with a well serviced LPG installation, selflubing and you wont feel the difference with petrol.

LPG on the bmw has always been good, but on the AJ engines always leads to valve seat recession. It can be fixed but can cost more than the conversion to put right

I get an avge cost of c.20-22p per mile on LPG. That is much cheaper than the cost per mile of a TD6/TDV8 which only get around 25-28MPG (according to most on here)

Recently did a trip of over 250 miles to Lake District (mainly motorway at 70-75mph and got over 268 miles on £40 of LPG cost per mile 14.9p per mile (equivalent to 34mpg on petrol or 36MPG against a diesel equivalent.

and it sounds great and gives the cleanest emissions of all fuels. Recently one of the MOT measurements was 0% (can't remember which gas)

And you know...apart from the mpg ratio, there is one thing that counts more ( for me anyway) i am driving a big V8 and it is a clean car, emisions are futile compared to diesel and petrol. My car has the Jag engine and 79k mls on the counter, had LPG from new and is doing great.

LPG yes, i have LPG on the bmw engine, get one with a decent brand name. mine is Prinz. there are loads of diesel versus LPG questions already. but, old Diesels are going out of favour, soon no longer welcome in london etc. could be a time in future that diesels are very cheap.... also if you buy a rangie before the april 2006 build date, you will have cheaper (£280ish) road tax.
about £450 after i think. even diesel.
have a search on internet for locations of garages. buy your car with it already on, and with a certificate, and log book showing they are aware etc. you wont be allowed on eurotunnel though. LPG banned in tunnel etc.
Also, its impossible to fill up with wrong fuel, unless you are a complete wally and on the very unliikely event you do top up your petrol tank wrong, then you sort of deserve it.
(you still have full use of petrol at flick of switch , so you never run out, you just start paying double-ish) iphone apps to show you locations, on the move to satnav you to LPG fuel, but generally 250 miles on a tankfull.

this is the best bit, -drive a range rover for the price of a mondeo.
ignore all fuel figures, its about the same in normal driving.
if i WON a new mondeo type car, i would sell it. and carry on driving the Range.
compared to a similar price-ranged car, ie over £5000 i think they are the same-ish to maintain, if you use a trusted non-dealer, and you read forums like this to get information on how your car works, and how to maintain it. You do not need to ever go to a dealer, for panic repairs -believe me.

last tip, try and get one thats had a recon gearbox.

lastly, go and buy one!

Another advantage of a petrol RR with LPG is the more reliable gearbox .
The gearbox in the diesel models have their design faults and are a bit flaky

I would go log anytime over a smelly diesel. I do about 20 000 a year and it works out very economic. 2nd gas one I have had and never had a problem with the installations
