I wondered about this too. Just back from Canada where we had a GMC Yukon with a powered tailgate, which was great (so was the rest of the car). In theory, the gas struts could be converted to electric, but it would probably be quite costly.

The biggest stumbling block would be the latches do NOT self close! We have been looking into this for a company that wanted to produce a kit but without powered/self closing latches it was a non starter!

No, not the L322.

Went to the local dealer's unveiling of the L405 and one of the first things they said was, "Now, finally, a powered tailgate."

I'm glad they don't At 66 its the only exercise I get!

I am probably being thick, but can you explain what you mean by the latches not self-closing?

When I shut my lower and upper tailgates they just lock into place with a gentle push. Why would this not work the same way with electric motors closing them? (and opening for that matter ?)

No problem Joe... Like a RRS or many BMW's & Merc's, when you close the doors or tailgates they have an electric motor in the latch that self closes the door/tailgate...

You may have heard it called "soft closure"?

Basically your tailgate needs a slam to close it... A soft closure system needs for you to only close the door onto the first stage of the latch (no resistance from the rubbers) the motor then closes the door onto the second stage of the latch... The automatic/electric boot opener/closer needs only to close the boot onto the first stage latch and the electric motor does the rest of the work. Without this the tailgate would need the electric opener/closer to simulate a slam when closing! Thus probably destroying the mechanicals of it and secondly, creating a "miss closure" every so many closes (much like we do every 5 or 10 times you close it and don't quite get enough oomph behind it)

Now times that by two Top & bottom tailgate!

Did anyone try retrofitting the "innards" of the L405? I'm curious if that would be possible. 2012 Range Rover Autobiography
