tuning boxes? good or bad?

Am thinking about getting one for more power (overtaking) and better mpg tootling around. Has anyone any experience of the Drakebox2 (£90 from Italy?) They reckon they can get a 3.0L TD6 up to 236 BHP. can it really handle that much power?

Some of the BMW and Rover 75 boys seem to use them and have had good results.

Anyone got any thoughts on the poss dangers?

Maybe, but what about the gearbox would be my question?

I've been into tuning cars for a long time now and I've never heard of just mapping/ tuning box causing a problem.

On more modified engines where bhp is towards the limit of clutches then yes it's a problem. (fitting turbos and Superchargers)

Can't see that 20-30 bhp extra would cause a problem on even the RR.
If it's that close to the limit stock then they'd go on stock cars regularly... And I don't mean cars with 70k miles plus!

Having driven on a regular basis a Tdv8 mapped then IMHO its worth every penny! TDV8 HST Sport **Current**

Strength, or lack of, is generally not what kills the 5L40E - BMW even hung it behind up the M57 with over 40hp more in the X5.

I spent quite a bit of time researching this topic last year (didn't I post about that here? - I'll have to check). The problems result from a lack of adequate control pressure due to the valve body wearing prematurely. This apparently results from the aluminum alloy in the valve body being somewhat soft. As I was told by several experts, all the issues that are often identified as causes are simply results of this low pressure.

I'll try to find the writeup I did and repost it in this thread.

Edit: Doh. Found it. I posted it in a German RR forum (I can copy and paste from an English forum to a German and most will understand. Don't think that works in reverse...). In a bit of a hurry now - will try to find the time to re-write in English Confused
