Thanks for your reply Pete. I agree, I'd like to get it looked at more closely by a specialist before shelling out. I did go out for a road test with an independent mechanic today and his thoughts were it was a transfer box. I guess I'm after some recommendations for knowledgeable independents in north London/Herts to take it to for a second opinion really. |

Howes engineering in Hare a Street near Buntingford are a good independent LR specialist. I have used them once and was impressed and know people who have always used them for their Discos and RR's |

Could it be front diff or wheel bearing or brakes binding?

My 2p is on the rear diff sir... Have the oils checked in all three! Ive had a few over the past 12 months where the rear diffs have whine'd like an old seventies school bus! |

Latter transfer boxes seem quite robust, don't really hear of too many problems apart from the occasional leak.

Really appreciate all your replies guys, thanks. I popped a couple of emails off to specialists yesterday and a guy from G & G in Ware rang me this morning. Sounds knowledgeable and he's going to try to get it in next week to really have a good look at it to see what's going on. He was of the same opinion, it's unusual for a transfer box to go.

Is there any leaks? Daft it might sound but sometimes it might point to something? |

Just to wrap up this thread. The car was off the road for a while whilst the locks were changed due to my house being burgled and the spare key stolen. When I got the car back the noise was worse so got it up to G & G Automotive in Ware, Herts. They diagnosed a worn out transfer box due to lack of oil so replaced it with a new box supplied by Land Rover. There must have been a leak at some point, but I've never seen any oil under the car, so maybe it only leaked whilst moving. I'm no expert, so could be wrong.

I am driving round with a knackered front diff at the moment. It started with a feint whine that got worse with speed. Now it is a very loud whine that is loudest when I lay off the accelerator and freewheel. 2014 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography & 2015 3.0SDV6 HSE Lux Discovery 4
