TD6 wouldn't start this morning.

This morning I couldn't get my car to start.

Normally my car always starts within a second or so on the starter motor. I don't normally even bother waiting for "pre heating".

This morning I turned the ignition for a good 5-6 seconds - Nothing. Tried 4 times (allowing pre heating to kick in too). Each time nothing. I had the following warnings flash up - HDC inactive, and also Air suspension inactive. This would normally indicate a low battery I think, however the battery seems fine and it happily spins the starter motor at full speed for several seconds. (I only stopped because I didn't want to flatten the battery).

The outside temp was -0.5 and there wasn't much ice on the windows. There should be 2-3 gallons of fuel in the car. Yesterday I had a decent run of 100 miles or so and the battery seems to be OK. (it was new last year).

Any suggestions? No longer FF owner but still interested. Present car Jaguar XE

Check you are getting fuel delivered. release a pipe at the fuel filter and with suitable receptacle to catch fluid turn on ignition. fuel should flow! If not secondary fuel pump might need a bash with a hammer (under rear passenger side) or worse the primary one in the tank. Seems most likely cause, unless several of your injectors packed up at once or your fuel rail wiring has gone up the swanee? .

Thanks for quick reply.

Quick recap. Popped back home for a short time. Tried to start car, left it turning on starter for about 20 seconds and the engine fired but ran very "lumpy" for a while before cutting out. So it would appear to be fuel related. Got to go back to work so can't do anything now.

BTW It was quite cold last night (could the fuel be waxed up in the lines?). No longer FF owner but still interested. Present car Jaguar XE

If you are unlucky enough to have "summer" diesel in the tank than waxing is a possibility. You could put a few liters of petrol in and run it for a bit while it is warmish during the day and hope that is enough and then fill up with winter diesel asap.

Also try running a diesel fuel cleaner additive on a few tanks to clean out the fuel pumps, valves, injectors just be sure. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

I have never seen diesel sold as summer or winter fuel in GB No longer FF owner but still interested. Present car Jaguar XE

Uk diesel will start waxing around -20 degrees according to google so i dont think thats your problem.. ... - .- -.

Quick update.

It started Ok last night after a few seconds on starter motor and ran for a few minutes then cut out. It's a bit milder now so I don't think it is cold diesel. The battery seems fine and will turn the starter motor at full speed for 20-30 seconds easily. I am guessing it is probably fuel starvation either due to a faulty pump or a blockage somewhere. The car is outdoors and it is dark when I get home each evening, so I will look at it on the weekend.

Well finally managed to get time to check out the car.

Undid pipe from fuel filter, plenty of fuel pumping out when ignition turned on, so fuel pumps would seem to be fine.

Still no luck starting car. Now getting a "Fuel Injector" fault signal on the dashboard panel. (However I am getting a few others faults also flashing as the battery is getting a bit low after all the attempts to start the car.)

How do I check the fuel injectors?

By the way, there is a small inline filter on a tube next to the fuel pump (see picture). One tube had become detached from this small filter. I reconnected the rubber tube but not sure exactly what it is for. Is it some sort of fuel return pipe?

Starting (excuse poor pun) to sound like injector wiring loom, but could be injectors themselves.

You will need the engine covers off (all three) and the intake manifold to get at the injectors.

I did a little howto on leak testing http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic25333....=leak+test and replacing injectors http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic25398.html a while back (see loom in 2nd picture).


ohh, and the filter thingy, IIRC it should only be connected at one end? .

Thanks. Will have a read of the thread.

I am guessing that the car would start (roughly) if 1 or 2 injectors were knackered. But the car was running fine the night before and absolutely nothing in the morning. So I would guess it unlikely that they would suddenly be unserviceable overnight.

So, I guess as you mentioned, it could be a wiring problem. Any idea where I can find a wiring diagram? I have searched online.

So, what is the little filter actually for, if it's open ended? No longer FF owner but still interested. Present car Jaguar XE

Well I managed to download a workshop manual and had a read about the fuel delivery system….

I never realised it was so complicated and I don't really know where to start. All I know is that fuel is actually getting through the filter. After that I haven't got a clue.

I am assuming that the RAC wouldn't be able to help with something like this. So can anyone suggest a decent mobile mechanic in the North Wales/Chester area? No longer FF owner but still interested. Present car Jaguar XE

When the injector loom "went" on mine it was instant, whilst driving, engine was extremely lumpy, however it did start after stopping. The garage identified it through the codes (which ones I don't know. Fitting a complete new loom solved the problem.

Thanks for the input David. The problem is, I don't actually know that is the problem yet. I could probably fit a loom if I knew that was the problem. But looking at the fuel delivery diagrams in the manual it could be a pressure sensor, high pressure pump, wiring etc. I can't read any faults with my IID. No longer FF owner but still interested. hi mikeyjd. on the small filter thingy there should only be one pipe. i see you have another pipe connected at the bottom of the filter as there should be no pipe on this end where did the pipe come from, if its floating spare then you will have a massive vacuum leak. that pipe should belong somewhere else if egr it should be plugged or connected. Thumbs Up

Could be a breather, had a similar problem on my 530, turned out to be injectors weren't working when the engine was cold.

Should show a fault code indicating which injector it is. Get it plugged in and read the faults which should point to the culprit. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
