there seems to be 3 types of owner on the forum, you got the owners that are financially very comfortable and own new or nearly new FFRR, then there's the owners with well paid jobs that have 3/4 year old FFRR's and lastly there's the 'i always wanted a FFRR' peeps that can just about 'justify' the expense of getting a 2002/3/4 FFRR... ... - .- -. The grass isn't always greener abroad, I was offered a new German employment contract in February, money sounded great at €8200 a month, but then I was going to be paying 50% income tax, 19% social security deduction, loose my industry pension, loose even government minimum redundancy and I would not be able to claim any foreign earnings deduction for working out of the UK as all these things are deducted at source in Germany for seafarers. Staying on my UK contract costs my employer a huge amount, my state pension here might be less than it would have been from the German Govt but we have "free" health insurance, I can reclaim my overpaid income tax at the end of the year if I meet the conditions and for me at the moment I'm "only" paying 40% income tax. I turned down the new contract which is one reason why I am not returning to a German flag ship. The reason that I am more expensive to employ despite earning a lower UK contract salary is because in 2000 when my employers started employing UK seafarers they were NEVER going to operate German flag vessels so they agreed with our Union that should the ships ever become German flag the owners would pay our German tax and NI for us................... Well as they say, never say never because it happened. A change in German law required some of the fleet to be reflagged and suddenly the company wage bill doubled because all the ships had UK offices on special contract! We had to go because of an expensive mistake - I stayed because not enough German seafarers had the expertise to do my job, now I have trained 3 of them to take over from me, two of those promptly left to earn more with other shipowners! Another thing in Germany, seafarers have no employment protection, if the shipowners say they have no job for you then you just don't get employed, in the UK we cannot have the office door slammed in our face, we have an industry redundancy scheme. OK so the shipowners don't like it but it does mean they don't rush to get rid of all their employees the minute the industry takes a downturn. 2018 Mini Countryman Cooper S E All4 PHEV in Melting Silver - it’s whisper quiet in EV and polluter modes |
